Candidate Profiles

Mark Appel ‘78
Manhattan, Kansas
Mark graduated in 1978 with a degree in Animal Science. He then furthered his education at KSU studying plant pathology. Mark farmed for six years following school before devoting his career to working for construction and refrigeration companies in engineering, project manager and general manager positions. He is currently employed as a projects manager/engineer for McNeil Refrigeration. Mark feels his unique career path has given him a great perspective about education and the needs of business, and he’d like to serve on the Alumni Board as a way to give back some of what he received from his education at McPherson College. He is a firm supporter of a liberal arts education. Mark and his wife, Kathy Burkholder ’82, have two college-age sons. Mark has been active in leadership positions in his church and has served on numerous boards in his community.

 

Bill Grove ’65    Incumbent
Council Bluffs, Iowa 
Bill has been engaged in a lifetime career of education having served as a teacher, assistant principal, principal and Superintendent.  He retired in June 2004.  In addition to receiving his bachelor’s degree in math from McPherson College, Bill holds several advanced degrees in school administration.  He envisions his role on the alumni board as one way to “pay back” McPherson College for the education foundation he received and hopes to serve as an ambassador to future students.  After completing one term on the Alumni Board, Bill would like to continue to serve for his second term.  He is very excited that the new Alumni Legacy Scholarship was recently established and is eager to continue his advocacy for that scholarship and other initiatives the Alumni Board will sponsor in the future.

 

Julie Gillaspie Huber ‘92
Andover, Kansas
Julie graduated Magna Cum Laude from McPherson in 1992 with a dual degree in History and Business Administration, and was named Business Student of the Year her senior year. Since graduation Julie has worked in a number of positions for several banks and for the past five years has been the chief operating officer and executive vice president for Equity Bank in Andover. She and her husband, Brian ’94, are parents of two children. Julie is active in her church and has served in a variety of leadership roles. Julie would like to use her business background to serve effectively as a Board member and would like to give back to the college that helped shape her perspectives on life.

 

Geneva Sanger Krehbiel ’75   Incumbent
Pratt, Kansas
Since graduating with a degree in home economics and summa cum laude honors, Geneva has dedicated most of her career to being a full-time mother.  Two of her five children are McPherson College graduates, one more will graduate this spring and his fiancé will graduate next spring. Geneva has been active volunteering at all school levels in various clubs, activities and athletic events during the time her children were at home.  She has been a substitute teacher for the last 13 years.  As a member of the alumni board, Geneva envisions becoming involved with college promotion, which includes keeping alumni in contact and involved with their alma mater.

 

Nancy Keim Lengel ‘57
McPherson, Kansas
Nancy graduated from McPherson College with a biology degree in 1957. She taught 7th grade math and science and worked at Duke University Med. School as a lab technician for several years before assuming a full-time role as mother and homemaker. In 1979 Nancy returned to the work force as a travel agent and continued in that role for 16 years, before working as Assistant to the Registrar at MC from 1995-2000. Her late husband, Dr. Lee Lengel, was professor of History and Politics at McPherson College for many years. Their two children are both graduates of McPherson College. Nancy is active in her church and has volunteered in the community throughout her life. She is happy to help the college in any way she can, so is willing to serve on the Alumni Board in this way.

 

David Mollhagen ‘82
Wichita, Kansas
A 1982 Agri-Business graduate from McPherson College, David, his wife Esther (Burge) ’82, and their three daughters reside in Wichita, where David is real estate manager for the Wichita division of Clear Channel Communications/DONREY Outdoor Advertising. For the past 23 years he has also been an associate broker for Century 21 Real Estate. David’s oldest daughter is currently a student at MC. He actively serves his church, community, city of Wichita and local school district in a number of leadership and advisory roles. David feels his diverse background both in the teaching and financial fields would help him serve effectively as an Alumni board member.

 

Mario Rodriguez ‘96
McPherson, Kansas
Mario is a ’96 grad, having transferred to McPherson College after receiving his Associates degree from Central Christian College. While at McPherson, Mario played soccer, earning numerous awards. He continues to be involved in soccer and has coached at the college level all the way down to 12 & under age groups. He also volunteers for activities with developmentally disabled adults and children in the community. Mario is employed at Hospira as a Pharmaceutical Technician. He and his wife, Karen (Walton) ’99, reside in McPherson and are parents of three young children. Mario would like to serve on the Alumni Board as a way of serving his Alma Mater and feels he can assist with alumni events by being a local resident.

 

Royce Roesch `61    Incumbent
Quinter, Kansas
Over the years Royce has utilized his sociology and industrial arts education to fulfill roles such as Brethren Volunteer Service in Europe for three years, a house parent, teacher, farmer, bus driver, and business partner.  He is an active member of the Quinter Church of the Brethren and enjoys spending time with his 13 grandchildren.  Royce looks forward to being an active member of the alumni board given his family connections.  He, his wife, and their four children are just the beginning of an extensive family line of McPherson College graduates.

 

Annette Burkholder Van Blaricum ’68    Incumbent
Pratt, Kansas
Annette is retired from a 30 year teaching career which included kindergarten and Title 1 reading and math. She is the state president of American Association of University Women 2006-08, and is president of United Methodist Women in Pratt.  As an alumni board member, she plans to serve as an advocate for students, staff, and alumni with the ultimate goal of enhancing educational opportunities provided by McPherson College.  Annette served as Alumni Board president in 2007-2008.

 

Brian Veal ’04   Incumbent
Peculiar, Missouri
Brian graduated with honors from McPherson College with an associate’s degree in auto restoration technology in 2002 and a B.S. in business administration in 2004.  He is employed as a restoration specialist for Peterson Manufacturing.  While in college Brian was a Resident Assistant, was active in CATS Club and was vice-president of the Business Club.  He and his wife, Tara ’05, are parents of a young daughter.  Brian feels that as a recent graduate he can connect to current and future students and can share the many opportunities and experiences the college has to offer.  He has stayed connected to the college and appreciates the life skills and experiences he had while at McPherson College.  Brian  has been a valuable asset to the Alumni Board this past year, serving in an unexpired term of another board member, and would like to continue serving on the Alumni Board.
