Romero tops McPherson’s 2004 All-KCAC basketball picks

Kenny Romero, senior forward on McPherson College’s men’s basketball team, has been named to the 2003 All-KCAC (Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference) basketball first team in votes by the conference’s coaches. The men’s first team was introduced Tuesday evening at the conclusion of the men’s tournament at Tabor College in Hillsboro.

Joining Romero in receiving men’s all-conference honors were Roy McDonald, Brian Hooks, and Jordan Carter. McDonald and Hooks were named to the All-KCAC honorable mention team while Carter was named to the All-Freshman team.

KENNY ROMERO – A graduate of Pueblo East High School in Pueblo, Colo., the 6’5”, 205-pound, Romero was a unanimous first team All-KCAC selection. He finished the season with an average of 20.8 points per game after leading the KCAC in regular season individual scoring at 20.5 points per game. Kenny was second in KCAC individual rebounding, pulling down 8.6 rebounds per game. He completed his senior season hitting 56.4% of his total field goals attempts, a figure which ranked third in the KCAC. Romero’s top offensive performance of the season came against York College of Nebraska when he scored a career high, 35 points. Twice named KCAC men’s “Player of the Week” during the 2003-2004 season, he was the Bulldogs’ leading rebounder 22 times, leading scorer 21 times, and he posted 13 double-doubles. He also set a new single season school record for field goals made in a season with 244.

Romero will graduate as McPherson College’s all-time leading scorer and rebounder, finishing his collegiate career with 2,000 points and 920 rebounds. He previously was named to the All-KCAC first team in 2001 and 2003, was the KCAC’s “Freshman of the Year” in 2001, and following his junior season he was named a NAIA honorable mention All-American.
During his four seasons and 110 games in the Bulldog red and white, Romero led McPherson is scoring 63 times, in rebounding 71 games, scored 20 or more points in 48 games and 30 or more points eight times, and posted 43 double-doubles. He also set a new school record for field goals made in a career with 796. He converted over 53% of his field goal attempts every season, topped by his 58.7% for his freshman season and 56.4% as a senior.

“ Teams knew that Kenny was our only consistent inside force, so a lot of teams doubled down on him, and made he earn each and every point and rebound he got,” said McPherson head coach Roger Trimmell. “With Kenny’s graduation, we’re going to have a big hole to fill in the middle next year.”

ROY McDONALD – McDonald, a 5’9” junior point guard from Houston, Texas, received All-KCAC honorable mention honors for the second straight year. A graduate of Elsik High School in Houston, McDonald ranked third among the KCAC’s regular season top-ten in steals, averaging 2.14 per game, and finished the year averaging 3.2 assists, seventh in the KCAC during the regular season. The Bulldogs’ leading scorer three times this past season, he posted a season high, 21 points three times. For the season, he averaged 12.5 points per game, third best among the Bulldogs. McDonald grabbed a season high eight rebounds against Bethel College and finished the season grabbing 3.7 rebounds per game to rank fourth among the Bulldogs. He ended the regular season dishing off an average of 3.2 assists per game to lead McPherson while averaging only two turnovers per game despite the fact almost ever play the Bulldogs ran went through him. McDonald reached the 1,000 point career scoring mark in the Bulldogs’ second win over Kansas Wesleyan, becoming the 13th male in McPherson College history to do so.

“ When Roy concentrated on being our floor leader, and getting the ball to our other players in a position to score, we were a very good team,” said Trimmell. “Roy hit some big shots that carried us at times during the season, but his leadership, both offensively and defensively, were still his biggest contribution to our team.”

BRIAN HOOKS – Hooks, a 6’4” junior forward from Garland, Texas, was named to the All-KCAC honorable mention squad for the first time in 2004. A graduate of North Garland High School, Hook was the Bulldogs’ leading scorer seven times this past season, posting a season high of 23 points in the Bulldogs’ second win over Central Christian College. For the season, he averaged 12.7 points per game, second on the Bulldog squad and 12th best in the KCAC. Hooks grabbed a season high 12 rebounds twice, against Friends and Bethany. Hooks finished the regular season pulling down an average of 6.18 rebounds per game to rank 10th in the conference, and second only to Romero among the Bulldogs. One of the KCAC’s most accurate shooters, he shot 77.9% from the free throw line for the year after ranking 7th in the KCAC during the regular season and 45.1% for total field goal attempts to rank ninth among KCAC players.

“ Brian made so many contributions this season, both offensively and defensively,” said Trimmell. “He was able to hit the outside jumper or make the slashing move to the inside. He generally was assigned our opponent’s best wing player and he consistently stepped up to that task.”

JORDAN CARTER – Carter, a 6’0” guard from Scott City, Kan., was named to the KCAC All-Freshman team. A graduate of Scott County Community High School, Carter played in every game this season and averaged 6.2 points to rank fifth on the McPherson squad along with grabbing 1.56 rebounds and dishing off 1.2 assists for the year. Shooting 33% from beyond the 3-point line, Jordan just missed ranking in the KCAC’s top ten during the regular season. He scored a season high 16 points in the Bulldogs’ January win win over Kansas Wesleyan. His rebounding high of five came as past of McPherson’s December win over Sterling. He dished off a season high five assists as McPherson defeated Haskell Indian Nations in the Bethel Classic.

“ Jordan has matured as a college player very quickly,” said Trimmell. “We knew he could shoot the ball coming out of Scott City, but he has also adapted in the role of getting the ball to our other scorers and playing hard on the defensive end. We look for Jordan to have a great career in his four years as a Bulldog.”
