04-05 All-KCAC HONORS

Turner named NAIA All-American Scholar-Athlete

 

Jamar Turner, McPherson College senior, was recently named a 2005 Daktronics-NAIA Men's Basketball All-American Scholar-Athlete.

 

Criteria for the honors include an academic standing of junior or above with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale, and nomination by the institution's head coach.

 

“We are very proud of Jamar,” said Roger Trimmell, McPherson College head coach. “His contributions to our campus haven't just come on the court or just in the classroom. He is an example of the well rounded student we are proud to have at McPherson College .”

 

A 2001 graduate of Mount Saint Mary High School in Oklahoma City , Okla. , Turner has maintained a cumulative grade point average of over 3.9 in business administration. This past year, he has served as president of the college's Business Club.

 

During the 2004-2005 season, Jamar played in 27 games, averaging 2.1 points while shooting 80% from the free throw line and 40% from the field for the Bulldogs as they finished the season with a 19-10 record. Turner scored a 2005 season high of 7 points twice, against Central Christian College and Kansas Wesleyan. His career high game was 10 points, scored against Haskell Indian Nations University during his sophomore year.

Hooks leads Mac's ALL-KCAC selections

Brian Hooks, senior forward, was named to the 2005 All-KCAC (Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference) basketball first team in votes by the conference's coaches.

The men's first team was be introduced Monday evening at the conclusion of the men's KCAC post-season tournament at Sterling.

Joining Hooks in receiving men's all-conference honors were Roy McDonald and Lee Gustafson. Both were named to the All-KCAC honorable mention team.

  

BRIAN HOOKS – Hooks , a 6'3” senior forward from Garland , Texas , was a unanimous selection by the KCAC coaches. He previously received All-KCAC honorable mention honors in 2004. A graduate of North Garland High School , Hook was the Bulldogs' leading scorer during the regular season, averaging 14.1 points for the 19-9 Bulldogs. The two-time “KCAC Player of the Week” during the 2005 season, Hooks led McPherson in scoring 11 times this past season, posting a season high of 26 points in the Bulldogs' wins over Bethany College and Friends University . He led the Bulldogs with 70 assists and had four regular season double-doubles. For the season, he ranked 10 th among the KCAC leading scorers. Hooks grabbed a season high 13 rebounds against Oklahoma Wesleyan University, on his way to a season average 6.3 per game, tying for 8 th in the KCAC, and second only to Gustafson among the Bulldogs. Hooks was 9 th in the KCAC in steals per game, with an average of 1.36, and hit 45.0% of his total field goal attempts to rank 9 th in the KCAC.

Hooks finished his career as McPherson College 's #8 all-time career leading scorer with 1,339 points in 116 games played.

“Brian has been a mainstay for the Bulldogs over the past four years,” said

McPherson head men's coach Roger Trimmell. “He has been a solid all-around player and this season passed the 1,000-point milestone in his career, an impressive statistic.”

“I was pleased that Brian was twice honored as ‘Player of the Week' this season. He was very deserving of those honors as well as being named to the All-KCAC first team.”

  

Honorable Mention All-KCAC

ROY McDONALD – McDonald , a 5'10” senior point guard from Houston , Texas , has received All-KCAC honorable mention honors for three straight years. A graduate of Elsik High School in Houston, McDonald ranked third among the KCAC's regular season top-ten in steals, averaging 2.11 per game, and led McPherson with an average of 3.0 assists per game, eighth best in the KCAC during the regular season. The Bulldogs' leading scorer twice this past season, Roy posted a season high of 23 points in McPherson's first win over Kansas Wesleyan University . For the season, he averaged 11.8 points per game, third best among the Bulldogs. McDonald finished the season grabbing 4.7 rebounds per game to rank third among the Bulldogs. Despite the fact almost ever play the Bulldogs ran went through him, he averaged less than two turnovers a game. His 59 steals and average of 2.1 per game, both ranked third in the conference.

McDonald became the 13 th male in McPherson College history to reached the 1,000 point career scoring mark in 2004 and finished his four-year Bulldog career with 1,393 points, seventh on the Bulldogs' all-time career list in 117 games.

“At 5'9” and jet quick, Roy has played in more games than any player to ever don a Bulldog uniform,” said Trimmell. “ Roy has had a great career, scoring over 1,000 points and becoming our career assist leader.”

“We're going to miss seeing him out front running our offense next year.”

 

LEE GUSTAFSON – Gustafson , a 6'6” junior center from Junction City , Kan. , has come on strong in his first full season in the Bulldogs' starting lineup. A graduate of St. Xavier High School , Lee averaged 13.4 points this season, second among the 2005 Bulldogs. While his 8.1 rebounds led McPherson, they also ranked second in the KCAC. Gustafson was successful on 49.5% of his field goal attempts, fourth best in the KCAC. Lee led McPherson in scoring 10 times and 18 times in rebounding. His regular season highs were 26 points in the Bulldogs' January win over Bethany and 15 boards in their December win at Kansas Wesleyan University . Gustafson posted seven double-doubles during the regular season and just missed four others when he had nine rebounds. Lee also topped McPherson in blocked shots with 18.

“Lee came to us out of tiny St. Xavier High School in Junction City ,” said Trimmell. “He has worked extremely hard each year to improve his skills. Lee is our best defensive player, and was second in the KCAC in rebounding. His hard work and dedication have paid off is his receiving this recognition.”

“We look for Lee to be among the top players in the conference next year.”
