Young,
Arnett named to All-KCAC honors
Two members of the 2007-2008
McPherson College men's basketball team received All-KCAC honors
in a recent vote of the conference's coaches.
Senior Shawn Young received
first team and All-Defense honors while senior Mitch Arnett was
named to the men's honorable mention squad. 2008 was Young's second
time to be named to the KCAC All-Defense team.
Shawn
Young , a 2004 graduate of Arvada (Colo.) Pomona High School
and transfer from Trinidad State College in Colorado, led McPherson
in scoring with an average of 12.4 points per game, #8 in the KCAC.
He topped the Bulldogs in scoring nine times, with a season high
of 23 points in the Bulldogs' overtime win over Central Christian
College . Four times he led McPherson in rebounding, pulling down
a season high 10 as part of a double-double in the win over Central
Christian. He dished off a high of five assists, three times, and
led the Bulldogs with 73 during the regular season. He also topped
the Bulldogs with 35 steals. Shawn hit 40.8% of his field goal attempts
and 72.8% from the free throw line. A starter in 28 of the Bulldogs'
29 games, he topped the Bulldogs 1010 minutes played during the
season. Young is majoring in sociology.
“Shawn doesn't say much on
the court,” said McPherson head coach Roger Trimmell. “He just keeps
coming at you, on both ends of the court. He's a great defender
and has a little fade away jumper that is almost impossible to block.”
“Shawn was the Bulldogs'
primary ball handler and this season was the leading scorer.
Cat quick, Shawn was also named to the All-KCAC Defensive team for
the second year in a row.”
Mitch
Arnett , a 2004 graduate of Medicine Lodge (Kan.) High
School and transfer from Pratt Community College, led McPherson
with 179 rebounds, and average of 6.2 per game, ranking sixth in
the KCAC. He averaged 9.6 points on 277 points, second among the
Bulldogs. While short of the required total number of field goals
made, his 59.7% (99 of 167) field goal percentage would have ranked
second in the KCAC. Arnett led the Bulldogs in scoring six times,
topped by 20 points at Ottawa . He also led McPherson in rebounding
14 times with a season high 14 grabs in the Bulldogs overtime loss
at Ottawa , his third double-double of the season. Arnett was also
credited with 19 assists, 20 steals, and eight blocked shots. He
is majoring in business.
“Mitch has had to play inside
against guys who were bigger and taller than him almost every game,”
said Trimmell. “But, he has the ability to get great position and
has such soft hands, if we get the ball to him, he generally would
finish it.”
“A burly 6'4" post,
Mitch was a rugged inside post player. Mitch averaged nearly
10 points per game and was our leading rebounder at six caroms a
game.”
The 2007-2008 Bulldogs finished
their regular season with a 15-12 overall record, 9-9 and tied for
sixth in the KCAC race. The Bulldogs then went 1-1 in the KCAC post-season
tournament, advancing to the semifinals where they lost on a last
second shot to finish the season 16-13.
