Alvarez and Odhams named 2003 All-KCAC HM picks
In a vote by the KCAC (Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference) women’s coaches, Erica Alvarez, 5’11” McPherson College junior forward from Brownsville, Texas, and Sharla Odhams, 5’8” senior guard from Memphis, Texas, were named to the 2003 KCAC women’s honor mention team.
Erica Alvarez, a graduate of Rivera High School in Brownsville, was earlier named the KCAC “Player of the Week” following the Lady Bulldogs wins over Saint Mary College and Friends University in mid-January. A first team All-KCAC honoree in 2002, Alvarez led the Lady Bulldogs and ranked ninth in KCAC in both scoring and rebounding during the regular season, averaging 13.5 points and 6.3 rebounds per game. After being held to less than ten points in a single game only once during her first two years at McPherson, she found herself double- and tripe-teamed during the second half of the 2002-2003 season and her scoring average dropped from an early season high of 16.5 points per game to 13.2 points per game at the season’s end, still a McPherson College team high. Alvarez shot 46.9% from the field during the regular season, which also ranked ninth in the KCAC. She led McPherson in scoring and rebounding 14 times each, and had season highs of 23 points against Oklahoma Wesleyan and Kansas Wesleyan, and 11 rebounds four times. Alvarez became the third member of the McPherson College 1,000-point club this past season, and will enter her senior year with a career total of 1085 points. “Erica found out what is was like to be a ‘marked’ person the second half of this season,” said McPherson head coach Mel Wright. “After being first team all-conference last season everyone knew about her. Teams believed that if they could take Erica out of our offense, we would likely struggle to score points. And, they were right. With some additional strength, Erica should challenge for first team all-conference honors again next year.”
Sharla Odhams, a graduate of Memphis High School and Clarendon College, scored a season high 22 points in leading McPherson to a 83-74 win over then NAIA #2-ranked Sterling College on January 18. A repeat All-KCAC honoree, Odhams finished the season averaging 10.6 points and 4.7 rebounds a game. Her 2.6 assists per game ranked second among Lady Bulldogs. Odhams’ quickness, which keyed the Lady Bulldog defense, resulted in 103 steals. She led McPherson in scoring seven times and rebounding thee times. Her rebounding high was nine grabs at York College, while her assist high was 8 against Ottawa University. The Bulldogs’ second leading scorer in 2002-2003, Odhams hit 46.2% of all her field goal attempts during the regular season to rank 10th in the KCAC, whiled her 131 total rebounds and 74 assists ranked second among the Lady Bulldogs. She easily led McPherson with 103 steals and 39 blocked shots. A consistent performer, Odhams averaged 9.5 points (284 points in 30 games) her sophomore year, 10.7 points (279 points in 26 games) as a junior, then 10.6 points (296 points in 28 games) this past season. She also came away with at least 100 steals each season (100 in 2000-2001, 102 in ’01-‘02, and 103 in ’02-‘03). “A lot of people didn’t realize how valuable Sharla was to our team,” said Wright. “She was the key to our defense with her quickness out front, and that was doubly important because when we were successful offensively, it was generally a direct result of our defensive play. There is no doubt that we are going to miss the leadership and maturity that Sharla brought to our program.”
