Alvarez named “KCAC Player of the Week” Jan 13, 2003
McPherson College junior forward Erica Alvarez was named the KCAC (Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference) women’s “Player of the Week” for January 5-11, 2003.
Alvarez, a graduate of Rivera High School in Brownsville, Texas, had 15 points, 8 rebounds, 5 blocked shots, 4 assists, and a steal in the Bulldogs’ 81-61 win over Saint Mary College of Leavenworth (Kans.) on Thursday. She then came back on Saturday to net 22 points, 11 rebounds, 3 steals, an assist, and a block against Friends University, which entered the game tied for third in the KCAC race and had taken #2-ranked Sterling into triple-overtime on Thursday. Alvarez’s line against Friends was her fourth double-double of the season. For the week, Alvarez shot 66.7% from the floor and 83.3% from the free throw stripe. The two wins raised the Lady Bulldogs’ season record to 6-8 overall, 3-3 in the KCAC and into a tie for fourth in the conference race.
Alvarez, who was an unanimous All-KCAC first team selection in 2002, goes into this week’s play ranked fourth in the KCAC in scoring (15.1 points per game), eighth in rounding (6.9), and second in total field goal percentage (52.1%).
“Erica is really deserving of this honor,” said McPherson coach Mel Wright. “She has scored a lot for us in the past, but this past week she really started to step up with her defense in the low post. After last season, everyone knows her, and she has been double- and triple-teamed about every night out. Still, she has maintained her composure and hasn’t tried to force things (offensively). She’s an intelligent young lady; one who brings a quiet, maturity to the floor each and every game and practice.”
A physical education/Spanish major at McPherson College, Erica is the daughter of Jesus and Amalia Alvarez of Brownsville, Texas.
