Alvarez named 2004 All-KCAC basketball pick

Erica Alvarez, senior forward on McPherson College’s women’s basketball teams, respectively, has been named to the 2004 All-KCAC (Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference) basketball first team in votes by the conference’s coaches. The women’s first team was introduced at Monday’s championship game of the KCAC women’s post-season tournament in Sterling.

ERICA ALVAREZ – 2004 marks Erica’s second appearance on the All-KCAC first team. A graduate of Rivera High School in Brownsville, she was previously a All-KCAC first team honoree as a sophomore. The 5’11” senior led the Lady Bulldogs and ranked fourth in KCAC in scoring and fifth in rebounding during the regular season. She ended her senior season averaging 15.7 points and 7.9 rebounds per game. After being held to less than ten points in a single game only once during her first two years at McPherson, she found herself double- and tripe-teamed the past two seasons, and her scoring average dropped from her career high 17.9 points per game as a sophomore. Alvarez shot 46.6% from the field this past season, ranked 10th in the KCAC. This past season she led McPherson in scoring and rebounding 17 times each. Erica’s 2004 season highs were 26 points, against Ozark Christian in the Lady Bulldogs’ season opener, and 14 rebounds twice, against the University of Saint Mary and Ottawa University.

During her junior season when she was named to the KCAC’s honorable mention squad, Alvarez became only the third member of the McPherson College’s 1,000-point club.

One of the most consistent players in school history, Erica will graduate as McPherson’s #2 all-time scorer with 1,509 points, an career average of 14.1 points per game. She is the single season record holder for “Points Scored” with 484 (2002) and “Free Throws Made” with 116 (2002), and holds the school career records for “Free Throws Made” with 335 and “Games Played” with 107. Of those 107 games she played as a Lady Bulldog, Alvarez was the Lady Bulldogs’ leading scorer 59 times, leading rebounder 47 times, scored 20 or more points 24 times, and posted 20 double-doubles. She will leave the McPherson program with 694 rebounds, 155 assists, 155 steals, and 97 blocked shots, and in her four years of varsity play hit 72.8% of her free throws and 46.8% of her field goal attempts.

“We are really going to miss this young lady,” said McPherson head coach Mel Wright. “Erica found out what it was like to be a ‘marked’ person the past two seasons. After being first team all-conference as a sophomore everyone knew about her. Teams believed that if they could take Erica out of our offense, we would likely struggle to score points. And, they were right. I was just really pleased the other coaches in the conference recognized her importance to our program the past four years, and recognized her in this way.”
