Three
Lady Bulldogs grab first team All-KCAC honors
Three members of the 2007-2008
McPherson College women's basketball team were named to the All-KCAC
first team in a recent vote of the conference's coaches.
Seniors April Woody and Whitney
Pegram, and junior Jamie Brewer all received first team honors while
leading the Lady Bulldogs to an 18-8 regular season record and third
place in the KCAC (Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference).
The Lady Bulldogs then completed
their 2008 season with an overall record of 19-9, tying the school
record for wins in a season, after advancing to the semifinal round
of the KCAC post-season tournament.
“”I am very happy for April,
Jamie, and Whitney,” said Marcus Hick, McPherson College head women's
coach. “They have played important roles in our team's success.
This recognition is a great way to end their year, and for April
and Whitney, their careers at McPherson College .”
April
Woody, a 2004 graduate of Tescott (Kan.) High School, concluded
the season ranked #3 on the Lady Bulldogs' all-time career scoring
list with 1,149 points. This season, Woody was the Lady Bulldogs'
third leading scorer, averaging 12.5 points per game. She pulled
down 158 rebounds to rank third among the Bulldogs with an average
of 5.6 per game. She ranked second for McPherson with 99 assists,
and topped the KCAC with an average of 3.69. She was credited with
31 steals as a starter in all 28 games. April ranked #3 in the KCAC
in free throw percentage, hitting 81.5%% (86 of 106) of her charity
attempts. She ended her career hitting 79.9% of her free throws
(246 of 308), a new McPherson school record. Woody also led McPherson
hitting 42.1% of her three-point attempts (23 of 55). Four times
Woody led the Lady Bulldogs in scoring, topped by a season high
20 points in McPherson's mid-February win over Friends. She twice
led McPherson in rebounding, setting and equaling her season high
of 10, first against Central Christian and then at Kansas Wesleyan.
Woody is majoring in biology.
“April is probably the most
competitive person on this campus,” said McPherson head coach Marcus
Hicks. “She expects to excel and win at everything she does. She's
undersized physically, but is a real bulldog when it comes time
to step on the court and compete.”
Whitney Pegram, a 2003 graduate of Silver Lake (Kan.) High School,
led the NAIA Division II and KCAC during the regular season in blocked
shot average (4.35 per game) and total blocks (113). She finished
the season with 123 blocked shots, in her only season as a Bulldog,
tripling the previous single season McPherson school record (40)
and annihilating the career total (80) total. She raised the Bulldogs'
single game blocked shot record from five to seven, eight, and finally
nine, the final mark coming against Kansas Wesleyan. She led McPherson
and ranked second in the KCAC in total field goal percentage, hitting
49.5% (140 of 283). Whitney was the Lady Bulldogs' leading scorer
and rebounder, averaging 13.4 points and 8.8 rebounds per game.
Pegram led the Lady Bulldogs in scoring ten times and in rebounding
12 games. Her season highs were 23 points against Mid-America Christian
in the Bethel Classic and 17 rebounds in the KCAC tournament semifinals
against. She had seven scoring/rebounding, double-doubles and was
credited with 61 assists and 19 steals. Pegram is majoring in psychology
and sociology.
“Whitney came in and added
a new dimension to our team,” said Hicks. “She makes the other team
adjust what they want to do in the middle. She annihilated our blocked
shot record for a season and a career in just one year. She knows
the game and brings a great basketball IQ to the court.”
Jamie
(Sims) Brewer, a 2005 graduate of McPherson (Kan.) High
School, was the Bulldogs' #2 scorer, averaging of 13.2 points per
game, seventh best in the KCAC. She finished the regular season
ranked second in the KCAC in both steals and assists, averaging
2.65 steals and 3.65 assists per game. Her 70 total steals and 103
assists led the Bulldogs. A starter in all 28 regular season games,
Jamie completed the season with 92 rebounds. She shot 43.4% (128
of 295) from the floor during the regular season to lead the McPherson
guard corps. Brewer led McPherson in scoring five times, topped
by a career high 24 points at Ottawa . She had a season high eight
rebounds against Mid-America Christian University in the Bethel
Classic, and seven assists twice, against Tabor and York College.
Brewer is majoring in elementary education.
“Jamie is a gamer,” said
Hicks. “She really quick, and knows where she and the ball need
to be on offense, and senses where the other team wants to go when
she's on defense. She's a more nature two (shooting guard) than
a point guard, but she has stepped in where we needed her and kept
us on track.”
The 2007-2008 Lady Bulldogs
finished their regular season with a 11-7 conference record, third
in the KCAC race. The Bulldogs' 19 overall wins tied the school
record 19 total wins set by the 1981 team.
