Cheer and Dance Team

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions:

  • What are the skill requirements to make the squad?
There are no "required skills" to be part of the cheer and dance team at McPherson College, but I am looking for athletic students who are willing to learn new stunting, tumbling and dance techniques.
  • What's the time commitment of being part of the Spirit Squad at MAC?
The cheer and dance season is a year round sport. Tryouts are held in the spring, and throughout the summer team members will be required to work on skills and attend collegiate summer camp in July or August. Practices vary throughout the school year depending on upcoming performances, appearances and competition. Generally we practice three-five times a week plus games.
  • Is the program all-girl or co-ed?
We are trying to build a solid all-girl and co-ed cheer and dance program. Anyone of any level or experience background is encouraged to tryout.
  • Does the squad travel to away games?
The squad cheers for all home football and basketball games. We do cheer at most away games and depending on academic schedules, the squad may alternate which games they attend. Cheering at away games is determined by the coach prior to each season.
  • Can I participate in cheer and dance even if I am already part of another athletic team at MAC?
Yes. Although we encourage students to participate with the program all year round, we allow students who may be involved in other sports or activities to be involved with the team during their off seasons. One of the advantages of a school like McPherson, is you have the opportunity to be involved in several co-curricular activities. Scholarship money may vary depending on length of cheering season.
  • Is there a weight or size requirement?
Nope. However, as with any sport, certain physical attributes can make the sport much easier or more difficult for you.
  • Do you give cheerleading scholarships?
Yes, all members of the McPherson College Spirit program are eligible to receive thousands of dollars in scholarship. As a sport, all members will need to maintain a 2.0 GPA and complete 12 credit hours each semester.
  • Can girls make the squad who only based stunts in high school or who came from schools that were ground bound?
Yes. There are opportunities for anyone who is willing to learn new techniques whether you have previously been part of an all-girl, co-ed or ground bound squad.
  • How much does it cost to cheer at McPherson College?
NOTHING! All expenses for cheer and dance are paid! The school covers cost of uniforms, warm-ups, bags, shoes, camp, travel, food, etc.
  • I would like to become a mascot, do I need to tryout?
Mascots do not necessarily need to tryout, but I would like to meet with interested students. I am looking for dedicated students with a fun, outgoing, and creative personality. Mascots are considered part of the team and will be required to attend the same collegiate summer camp as the rest of the spirit team to learn new mascot skills and skits.
  • I have never had any cheer experience, but I have been a dancer or a tumbler for several years. Is there room for me on the team?
Anyone who has the desire to learn new skills regardless of previous knowledge may tryout.
  • When and where are tryouts?
Formal tryouts for the 2006-2007 season will be held May 6th at 2:00pm in the Sports Center auxiliary gymnasium. If you are unable to attend tryouts, you may schedule an individual tryout or send in a video tape of your skills anytime throughout the year.
