Bulldog JVs lose

Considering that at times McPherson College's junior varsity had a defensive back at quarterback, a linebacker at fullback and a defensive back punting for the first time, the Bulldogs more than held their own here Monday night against Independence Junior College.
The Pirates were able to outlast the Bulldogs 22-12 in a game that counted toward their record in the Jayhawk Juco Conference, Indy improved to 2-4.
However, after the Pirates jumped out to a 20-0 lead late in the second quarter, the Bulldogs actually outscored Indy 12-2 the rest of the way.
In fact on the night, Mac gave up only one offensive touchdown, as one of the Pirates' scores was on a 41-yard interception return by Allan Patrick.
"I thought our defense played real well," said Mac coach David Cunningham. "We were up against some good athletes tonight."
The Bulldogs bogged down offensively until defensive back Jon-Mark Bingham came in to quarterback. He threw a 5-yard scoring pass to Deke Belcher, set up by a 50-yard pass to Omar Montoya.
"Jon-Mark provided us a spark," Cunningham said. Bingham scored Mac's other touchdown in the fourth quarter on a 1-yard run.
The only Indy points in the second half came on a safety when a high snap went over the head of Bingham down by the goal line.
For the game, the Bulldogs held the Pirates to 244 total yards. Bullish fullback Melvin Singleton rushed for 114 yards on 18 carries, while 5-3 scatback Charles Long added 87 on 22 totes, including the only offensive touchdown on a 2-yard run.
The Mac JVs are now 1-1.
