“The pole vault was a hole we needed to fill for next season,” said McPherson College Track & field coach Pete Seal. “Klayton is a little bigger (6’ 0”, 180-pounds) than some vaulters, but he’s been shown the ability to participate at the state level. He’ll be a good addition.”

Klayton, the son of Kurt and Beth Keesling of St. John, intends to major in biology/environmental stewardship at McPherson College.

McPherson College has announced the recent signing of Tyler Soeken of Scott City, Kans. to a football letter of intent for the 2003-2004 academic year.

Soeken was a key part of Scott City’s return to the upper echelon of Class 4A football the last two seasons. Following his senior season, Soeken was a 2002 All-Mid-State League selection both as a defensive linebacker and an offensive guard. He was also named by the Garden City Telegram and the Hutchinson News to their 2002 All-Area teams. The 6’ 0”, 205-pound Soeken was credited with 87 solo tackles, four sacks, five forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries during his senior campaign.

“We are looking forward to having Tyler as a part of the McPherson College football program,” said McPherson College head coach David Cunningham. “He is a very intelligent young man, who will be successful in the classroom as well as on the field. We expect Tyler to compete for playing time at the outside linebacker spot.”

“I was trying to decide between Baker (University) and McPherson,” said Soeken. “What sold me was the improvement (McPherson) is making to their facilities. And, I feel there is a chance for me to step in and get a lot of playing time in the next two years.”

“We feel we have this program headed in the right direction, and we hope to keep getting better,” said McPherson secondary coach David Snodgrass, who was instrumental in the recruitment of Soeken. “We feel we can do this with athletes like Tyler, who have been part of successful programs in high school.”

Tyler has received a Dean’s Scholarship to McPherson. He intends to major in psychology. Tyler is the son of Mark and Janet Soeken of Scott City.

Cherry joins Bulldogs
McPherson College has announced the recent signing of Jacob Cherry of Cheyenne, Wyo., to a football letter of intent for the 2003-04 academic year.

“We are pleased to have Jacob joining us,” said McPherson College head coach David Cunningham. “Jacob will bring additional speed to our receiving corps next fall. We’re anticipating throwing the ball more next fall, and Jacob has the skills to be in the mix for playing time.”

A 6’0”, 185-pound wide receiver, Jacob Cherry also signed a letter of intent to participate in track and field at McPherson College. A two-year letter winner as a wide receiver and special teams player, Cherry helped lead Central High School, in Cheyenne, to the class 5A semi-finals of the Wyoming high school playoffs in 2002.

A three-year letterman in track with the 2003 up-coming, Cherry was a sprinter for Central’s 2001 Wyoming indoor and outdoor state championship teams, competing in the 55, 200, and 400-meter dashes as well as Central’s third place 4x400-meter relay. He anticipates competing in the 300-meter hurdles, and the sprints this spring for Central, which should again be in the running for another state title.

The son of Kevin and Lorna Cherry of Cheyenne, Jacob intends to major in auto restoration/graphics arts at McPherson College.

“I was very impressed the facilities and faculty in the auto restoration program,” said Cherry, “and I’m looking forward to the new graphics arts program.

“My visit at McPherson was very positive. The coaches are enthusiastic about their programs and the direction they are headed. I looking forward to having the opportunity to be part of the first teams to take advantage of the new facilities that will be in place next fall.”

Two sign to become Bulldogs
McPherson College has announced the recent signing Jared Ratzlaff of Fredonia, Kans., and Klint Green of Brazoria, Texas, to a football letters of intent for the 2003-04 academic year.

“We are pleased to have Jared and Klint joining us,” said McPherson College head coach David Cunningham. “They will improve our depth at linebacker and in our offensive line.”

The 5’11”, 207-pound, Jared Ratzlaff graduated from Fredonia High School, then spent the last two years at Coffeyville Community College. “Facing the task of competing in the Jayhawk Conference every day for two years has made Jared a better football player. Jared has stepped up to the task, and we’re glad to have him bring that competitive nature to McPherson. He’ll be in the hunt for playing time at linebacker for us.”

A three-sport letterwinner at Fredonia High, Ratzlaff was a state qualifier in wrestling and track as well as a Class 4A All-State and All-Tri-Valley League selection in football as a defensive lineman after his senior year. As a junior he was named to the All-Tri-Valley League first team as a lineman on both sides of the ball as well as a Class 3A honorable mention All-State selection. As a fullback for the Yellowjackets, Ratzlaff rushed for 612 yards on 99 carries from his fullback position as a senior.

Jared is the son of Rusty and Janet Ratzlaff of Fredonia, Kans., and plans to major in computer science at McPherson College.

At 6’1”, 280-pounds, Klint Green was a two-time All-District offensive tackle for Sweeny High School where he also was team captain his senior season. He is expected to provide depth to the Bulldogs’ offensive line that led the way for McPherson’s NAIA 17th ranked rushing offense.

“Klint should fit well with the upperclassmen we have returning on the offensive line,” said Cunningham. “He’s an intelligent young man who will be a good fit at McPherson College. He had a great visit earlier this winter and is anxious to get here and be a Bulldog!”

Klint is the son of Kent and Bonnie Green of Brazoria, Texas. He is currently undecided on a major.

Mac’s Heinen becomes Bulldog
McPherson College has announced the recent signing of Jared Heinen of McPherson, Kans., to a football letter of intent for the 2003-04 academic year.

A Pup becomes a Bulldog! Front row from left: Jeannie Heinen (mother), Jared Heinen, Dale Heinen (father). Back row, David Cunningham (McPherson College head football coach), David Payne (McPherson High head football coach).

“We are pleased to have Jared joining us,” said McPherson College head coach David Cunningham. “The biggest thing is that he wanted to be here. That means a lot to us. Jared is a good player, a good student, and a good person. That was impressive to us.”

The 6’0”, 160-pound Heinen was the second leading receiver for David Payne’s McPherson High Bullpups this past season. A three-year letter winner, Heinen averaged 13.8 yards per reception on 13 pass receptions, good for 180 yards, during his senior season.

“I had a chance to see them play, and I liked what I saw,” said Heinen. “The (McPherson College) program is going in the right direction, and I liked the coaching staff.”

“The new facilities are going to be really nice,” Heinen added, looking forward to the renovated McPherson stadium with it artificial turf surface. “And, I wanted to stay close to home.”

“A lot of times, local students want to get away from home (when they go to college),” Cunningham added. “We were pleased that Jared didn’t feel that was necessary to continue his education and playing career.”

“Jared should fit in well (to the Bulldogs’ offensive scheme.) We’ll be throwing the ball more next year,” said Cunningham, noting the Bulldogs often used four- or five-receiver sets a year ago when the Bulldog offense was more ground oriented.

Jared is the son of Dale and Jeannie Heinen of McPherson, Kans., and plans to major in business management at McPherson College.

Mac football signs a pair
McPherson College has announced the recent signing of Cal Tutak of Kingman, Kans., and Korey Ferguson of Guthrie, Texas, to football letters of intent for the 2003-2004 academic year.

Tutak is a 2000 graduate of Kingman High School and is coming to McPherson College after two years at Hutchinson Community College. The 6’0”, 235-pound Tutak is slated to battle for playing time at the middle linebacker spot of the Bulldogs’ defense, which ranked 13th in total defense and 6th in passing defense in 2002 among NAIA schools.

An All-State linebacker at Kingman, Tutak was a three-time member of the All-Chisholm Trail League D-II team.

“Cal will provide us with immediate help at the linebacker spot,” said McPherson defensive coordinator Bill Minard. “Cal is a very good player, and his experience in the tough Jayhawk Conference will help him succeed at Mac.”

“We are excited about Cal’s commitment to McPherson College,” added McPherson head coach David Cunningham. “He is an area player which is a priority for us as we continue to build our program. His size and speed will allow him to compete for one of our linebacker spots.”

The son of Ray and Barb Tutak of Kingman, Cal plans to major in business at McPherson College.

Ferguson will graduate this spring from Guthrie High where he was an All-District and All-Region linebacker this past season. A three-sport athlete at Guthrie High in football, basketball, and track, the 6’1”, 170-pound, Ferguson has also expressed a desire to participate in track at McPherson College.

Korey Ferguson signs on with the Bulldogs. On hand for the signing are (front row) Bill Minard, McPherson College defensive coordinator, and (back row, left to right) Harvey Wellman (Guthrie High football coach), Kristi Ferguson (mother), Bruce Ferguson (father), and Roddy Shipman (Guthrie basketball coach).

“We are very pleased to have Korey joining the McPherson College football program,” said Cunningham. “He is a very good ‘athlete,’ with good speed and quickness along with a good vertical jump. As an athlete, Korey can be a factor on our special teams early, and as he learns our system he will be more of a factor offensively.”

Even though his post-season honors in 2002 came on the defensive side of the ball, Ferguson is expected to battle for playing time at the running back spot in the Bulldogs’ 17th ranked NAIA rushing attack vacated by the graduation of All-KCAC performer Kevin Steiner. Ferguson rushed for 1312 yards on only 82 carries, averaging 16.0 yards per carry, for Guthrie High, which played the six-man version of football and finished the 2002 season with a 10-1 mark after losing the bi-district game by one point.

When asked what sold him on McPherson College, Ferguson replied, “I really had a great visit. I was treated like I was part of the ‘family.’ The upperclassman made me feel like I was really wanted. I’m really looking forward to getting there."

The son of Bruce and Kristi Ferguson of Guthrie, Korey plans to major in education at McPherson College.

Holtry signs with Bulldogs
McPherson College has announced the recent signing of Alex Holtry of Nampa, Idaho, to a football letter of intent for the 2003-04 academic year. Holtry was an all-conference and all-state selection at linebacker for Vallivue High School in Caldwell, Idaho.

Family tradition and the opportunity to play early in his collegiate career were both factors in Holtry’s final selection of McPherson College.

“The nice thing about playing at the NAIA level is it gives the opportunity to get a lot of football time in,” said Nate Borchert, former Vallivue head coach. “The potential is there for him to get some time his first year and then to start for three years. That’s the advantage of going to a smaller school, the chance for more playing time and every kid wants that.”

At 6’3”, 210-pounds, Holtry started for three seasons at Vallivue and, according to Borchert, he still has some maturing to do. “He is going to grow. I think he’s going to be a valuable contributor at McPherson.”

“I like the whole thing about the school,” said Holtry, who is president of his senior class, was academic all-conference honoree and was selected for the Shriner’s all-star game. “I went back four times.”

“I wanted to carry on the family tradition,” said Alex, who will join his older brothers, Dan and Matt, as fourth generation Bulldogs. Alex did receive some extra recruiting at home from Dan and Matt, both of whom attended and played at McPherson College where they were all-KCAC and All-American honorees. “Oh yeah, both of them talked to me about it. They both said it’s a great school that I’d like it there.”

Dan ’00, teaches and coaches in the Nampa school district, while Matt, McPherson College senior, is currently student teaching in the Nampa schools.

“We feel very fortunate to have another Holtry joining us,” said McPherson College head coach David Cunningham. “He’ll be a great addition to our program. We believe he’ll bring the same positive, competitive, nature to the program that both Dan and Matt have.

“Alex comes from an excellent program at Vallivue,” Cunningham added, “and if he is like the other young men we’ve had come from Idaho, you can send me some more. He’ll be a winner.”

Alex is the son of Byron and Kristine Holtry of Nampa, Idaho, and plans to major in education at McPherson College.

Lander joins Bulldogs
McPherson College has announced the recent signing of Ryan Lander of Shawnee, Oklahoma, to a football letter of intent for the 2003-04 academic year. Lander has been a mainstay on the offensive line for Shawnee High School, which qualified for the Oklahoma state playoffs two of the last three years.

“Ryan visited campus a year ago, and he really liked what he saw,” said McPherson coach David Cunningham. “We usually don’t do a lot of recruiting of high school juniors, but we stayed in touch with Ryan through the remainder of his junior year and into this year.

“Ryan is a good student and a good person. He is interested in auto restoration, and our having that as a degree program at McPherson was definitely a factor in his joining us.

“Ryan may be a little undersized right now for a typical, offensive lineman in the KCAC,” said Cunningham about the 5’10”, 210-pounds Lander, “but, with some time in the weight room, we believe he can develop the size necessary to compete in the conference.”

The son of Carolyn and Mike Lander of Shawnee, Okla., Ryan plans to major in auto restoration/industrial technology at McPherson College.

Seven join Bulldog gridders
McPherson College has announced the second semester enrollment of seven players, now on campus and who will participate in the Bulldogs’ spring drills.

Mark Bilbrey (Florence, Mont.) and Will Swanson (Howard, Kan.) were on campus during the fall semester of 2002-2003, and after making their classroom performance and the adjustment to college life their top priority during fall semester, they joined the team in off-season conditioning during the January interterm.

Transferring back and rejoining the Bulldog program is Sean Eason (Brookshire, Tex.) Eason previously attended and played at McPherson College in 2000 and 2001. He then transferred to Southwest Texas State, where he red-shirted for one semester, before returning to McPherson for the spring 2003 semester.

Sean Bolden (Wichita, Kan.) joins the Bulldog program after competing in the Jayhawk Conference with Independence Community College, while Jason Henry (Houston, Tex.) comes to McPherson from Blinn Junior College in Texas.

“It is good to have these young men already on campus, attending classes, working with their teammates on off-season conditioning, and getting ready for spring practice,” said McPherson coach David Cunningham. “We’re looking forward to having them for the spring practices that the KCAC allows. That will put them a step ahead of our other recruits that will be joining us in August.

“We feel good about the way our recruiting is going. We wanted to recognize these young men that are already here on campus and working. We have several letters (of intent) in hand that we’ll be announcing shortly.”

Eason is majoring in sociology.

Stephens, 6’3”, 230-lbs, graduated from White Rock High School, Burr Oak, Kan., just across the Kansas-Nebraska state line from his hometown of Guide Rock, Nebr. Majoring in history at McPherson Collge, Jason was a four-year letter winner in football and three-year honoree in basketball for the White Rock Eagles. He is expected to provide depth for the Bulldogs at the quarterback spot.

Wulf, 6’0”, 260-lbs, also graduated from White Rock High School in Burr Oak. An 8-man football, All-State, selection as a junior, Chad will compete for playing time on the Bulldogs’ defensive line. He is majoring in auto restoration at McPherson.

Bolden, 5’9”, 155-lbs, graduated from Wichita West High School before playing at Independence (Kan.) Community College. While at West High School, Sean was a member of the Pioneers’ state championship 4 x 100 meters relay team. As a defensive back at Independence CC in 2002, Bolden was credited with 13 tackles and three passes broken up. A music performance major at McPherson College, Sean is expected to battle for a defensive back position alongside his former Independence teammate, current Bulldog, Lucus Lanning.

While attending Blinn Junior College in Brenham, Tex., Henry was named “most improved” and “Ironman” within the Buccaneers’ program, plus he received all-academic honors. He will major in business at McPherson College.
