third at that distance as a junior.

but it is a key part of being a productive receiver.”
“We just
have to get him bigger, and this will also help in his blocking
which is important for our receivers to be able to do. Nick played
for a quality high school program, and he is from just down the
road, so his signing is a positive for us in several areas.”
“We are
very thin at the wide receiver spot going into the summer. We graduated
three good ones there from last year's team and finished the spring
with just three total for two positions.”

Erik, and prepare for the day when Erik graduates.”

is a good fit. He is anxious and excited; so much so he is
coming to campus in June to take part in our voluntary summer program.
This will give him a head start in learning the offense and getting
to know some of the guys. It is particularly valuable because
a large part of our receiving corps will be here this summer and
this will benefit both Darin and our other players.”

still recruiting a couple of other quarterbacks and hope to sign

Scott twice received All-Ark Valley honors in wrestling. He was named first team All-Ark Valley as a senior after being honorable mention all-league as a junior. Scott twice qualified for Class 5A state tournament at 171 pounds. He was also named to the KWCA All-Academic honorable mention team his senior season.
“Coming into his senior season, Scott was kind of flying below people’s radar, we didn’t really know him that well,” said McPherson College football coach David Cunningham. “But, as we watched (McPherson High’s home games), we just kept hearing the announcer say, ‘Tackle by Hammarlund, tackle by Hammarlund.’ Our defensive coaches really picked up on that. The more we watched him, the more we liked what we saw.”
“We’re just really pleased that he has decided to stay in town, and become part of our program. Being a three-sport athlete (football, wrestling, and baseball), he hasn’t spent as much time in the weight room as some guys, but the benefits he received from competing in wrestling and baseball have made up for part of that. With regular time in the (weight) room, we expect him to get bigger. Since he won’t have baseball and wrestling after this spring, he’ll have the opportunity to get in the (weight) room on a regular basis.”
“I was O.K. with the idea of staying in town,” said Hammarlund. “I like the scheme they use with their linebackers.”
Hammarlund was selected as team captain for both football and wrestling his senior year. He is the third member of McPherson High School’s 2003 football to join the Bulldog program after the Pups went 5-4 and finished third in the final season of the Ark Valley League. He will join previously signed Matt Hoffman and Tyler Hovis as part of the McPherson College this fall.
“I’m excited for Scott,” offered David Payne, McPherson High head football coach. “Scott was a real leader for us. He was responsible and dedicated to improving himself and our team. He helped our team more that he’ll ever know. He will be hard to replace.”
Scott is the son of Ted and Cheryl Hammarlund, and will represent the fourth generation on both sides of the house to attend McPherson College. His grandfather, Ronald Freed ‘57, played football and basketball at McPherson College, and his grandmother,Kathy Freed ‘60, has received the College’s Citation of Merit. Scott plans to major in pre-engineering.

As a senior he was credited with 85 tackles, an average of 10.6 per game, and rushed for 600 yards, an average of 4.7 yards per carry. He also averaged 19.5 yards per kickoff return for the Panthers.
Stephens was also a two-time state Kids Wrestling qualifier.
“We are always happy when a local player chooses to attend McPherson College and play football,” said McPherson College football coach David Cunningham. “Dallas was a good running back and linebacker at Nickerson. We expect him to play at either the 3-back or slot for us. With his speed and versatility, he has the necessary tools to also be an ideal special teams player.”
Reasons for Stephens to choose McPherson were multiple.
“I believe the program will be a good fit for me. McPherson is close to home, the financial package was good, and I liked what I’ve seen of the biology program,” added Stephens, who has a career goal as a fisheries biologist.
“The facilities here, nothing compares to them, from what I’ve seen on my other (college) visits.”
Dallas is the son of Jeff and Stephanie Stephens of Nickerson, Kan., and plans to major in biology at McPherson College.

Delta's McBroom joins teammate at Mac
McPherson College has announced the recent signing of Troy McBroom of Manteca, Calif., to a football letter of intent for the 2004-2005 academic year.
The 6’3”, 205-pound McBroom was a 2001 graduate of Manteca High School, then spent one year at St. Mary’s College in Moraga, Calif., before transferring to San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton, Calif. At Delta College, he was a teammate of current Bulldog, Lamar Jacobs.

McBroom was twice first team all-league and all-area at Manteca High, and following his senior season was named second team All-State. At Manteca High, he set school records for most yards receiving in a game (238 yards), longest reception (98 yards), and career receiving yardage (2,107 yards). He was credited with 1,124 receiving yards and nine touchdowns as a senior after catching passes for 983 yards as a junior.
Troy also averaged 12.3 points and 6.8 rebounds per game in basketball at Manteca High, where he lettered three seasons in basketball.
McBroom was Manteca’s “Most Valuable Offensive Player” in football, and “Most Valuable Defensive Player” in basketball his senior year.
“Troy is a tall, athletic receiver who with his height gives our receiving corps a dimension we have not had in the past,” said McPherson College football coach David Cunningham. “He is a wide receiver who is capable of making the big catch and then finishing the big play. We will be losing three wide receivers to graduation so he will be a nice addition to the four we currently have on the roster.”
Troy is the son of Yolanda Cooksey of Manteca, Calif. He plans to major in biology/kinesiology at McPherson College.

McPherson College has announced the recent signing of Jeff Samson of Atwood Kan., to a football letter of intent for the 2004-2005 academic year.
The 5’11”, 185-pound Samson received first team All-Northwest Kansas League honors his final three years at Atwood High School. He garnered honors as a defensive lineman as a sophomore, offensive lineman as a junior, then linebacker honors as a senior.

A three-year letter winner in wrestling, he qualified for the 2003 Class 1-2A state tournament before finishing third in the NWKL, one of the strongest wrestling leagues in Kansas, as a senior.
“Jeff is a young man who visited campus several times,” said McPherson College football coach David Cunningham. “He is an excellent student and a solid football player who will be a valuable addition to both our football program and our campus.”
“Although I am still learning my Kansas football history; we know he has been coached well as a linebacker because coach (Danny) Lankas was an outstanding linebacker at Kansas State.”
Jeff is the son of Joseph Samson of Atwood, Kan., and Gail Lewis of Dresden, Kan. He plans to major in auto restoration at McPherson College.

Moreno joins Bulldogs football
McPherson College has announced the recent signing of Robert Moreno of Gore, Okla., to a football letter of intent for the 2004-2005 academic year.

(Photo by Mike Erwin, sports editor of the Sequoyah County Times)
A two-year starter for Gore High School, the 6’0”, 275-pound Moreno helped lead the Pirates to a 7-4 record his senior season. With Moreno at a defensive end spot, the Pirates limited it seven league opponents to a combined 43 points while rolling to the District A-8 championship. He was credited with 108 tackles, nine sacks, two fumbles caused and two recovered, and one safety his senior season. He was named District A-5 offensive lineman of the year in 2001 and District A-8 defensive lineman of the year this past season.
Moreno was state powerlifting champion as a junior before placing second in the 275-pound class at this year’s Oklahoma championships. He set a state record enroute, pressing 415 pounds.
“Robert is a very strong, very physical football player,” said McPherson College football coach David Cunningham. “We were very impressed with the way he used his strength to man-handle blockers. He has been able to convert ‘weight room strength’ to ‘on-the-field strength.’ We expect him to be a contributor on a defensive line that we feel already has the potential to be the best in the KCAC.”
“It’s always nice to get a ‘hometown’ player, which we kind to feel is the case with Robert since (McPherson assistant) Jason (Chalashtari) is also from Gore.”
The opportunity to play as a freshman and McPherson’s facilities were factors in Moreno’s decision to join the Bulldog program after also being recruited by Sterling College and Northwestern Oklahoma State University in Alva. “I would have had to redshirt and sit out the whole year at Northwestern (OSU). I wanted to go in and get some playing time. It came down to the atmosphere at McPherson,” said Moreno. “They (McPherson and Sterling) both offered me playing time.”
“At McPherson, they have a lot of guys that are pretty strong and I’ll have some good workout partners.”
“Strengthwise, nobody holds a candle to Robert,” offered Gore head football coach Mike Broyles. “He set the standard for what we need to do in the weight room. The kids are looking up to him. Robert’s always been a foundation for us on the line, both offensively and defensively. Having a state champion powerlifter, people saw that and said ‘I can do that, too.’ The numbers have gone up in the weight room and he pushes us. Not only is he trying to do better for himself, he’s also trying to get the younger ones to do better and reach their goals. Robert has taken the whole program up.”
“We’re just really proud of the fact that Robert’s decided to go to college,” said Broyles. “That’s how we determine our success—by kids taking that next step.”
The son of Robert and Maria Moreno of Gore, Okla., Robert II intends to major in biology/sports medicine at McPherson College.

“I think they’ve got a good football program and I really like the coaching staff,” said Froese regarding his decision to join the McPherson College program.
“Austin continues our success in our local area recruiting as he is the second Inman player to sign with the Bulldogs,” said McPherson College football coach David Cunningham. “We expect him to play linebacker for us and with his ability he should also be a key part of our special teams.”
“We have linebackers who are upperclassmen and we need to sign some younger ones for the future.”
“Austin had several schools interested in him and it is gratifying that he chose to attend McPherson College and become a member of our football program.”
“Austin’s a tenacious defender and he’s going to fit right in with us,” added McPherson defensive coordinator Bill Minard. “One the things we strive to recruit are players with athletic ability as well as character, and Austin definitely has both.”
Austin is the son of Ray and Dawn Froese of Inman, Kan., and plans to major in sports medicine.

Sacred Heart’s Weiser signs with Mac
McPherson College has announced the recent signing of Brian Weiser of Salina, Kan., and Sacred Heart High School to a football letter of intent for the 2004-2005 academic year.
The 5’11”, 180-pound Weiser was a first team All-Cottonwood Valley selection and honorable mention All-State and All-Area pick as a linebacker following his senior season when he was credited with 142 tackles for the Knights..
Brian was also named second team all-league at the fullback position as a senior after leading the knights in rushing with 985 yards after switching from fullback to tailback. He also caught passes for another 320 yards, and scored 20 touchdowns. An all-around athlete, Weiser has also competed in basketball and baseball for Sacred Heart High.
“We expect Brian to compete for playing time at the outside linebacker spot,” said McPherson College football coach David Cunningham. “Jim Wittman (head football coach) does a great with the program at Sacred Heart, so we know we are getting a fundamentally sound player in Brian.”
“With his speed and versatility, Brian will be able to help us out both on defense and in the kicking game.”
Weiser played on the varsity level all four years at Sacred Heart and started on both sides from his sophomore year on.
“We have tried hard to get into the Salina area. All the Salina schools have very good football programs, and we see Brian’s as the first of what we hope will be many future Salina signings.”
The son of Larry and Marcia Weiser of Salina, Kan., Brian intends to major in elementary education at McPherson College with a career goal of teaching and coaching.

Hovis signs with Mac
McPherson College has announced the recent signing of Tyler Hovis of McPherson, Kan., to a football letter of intent for the 2004-2005 academic year.

“I just wanted to stay home,” said Hovis. “They’re a good team and they’ve gotten better the last two years.”
“We’re very pleased to have Tyler become part of our program,” said McPherson College football coach David Cunningham.
“McPherson High School had a successful season in 2003, and Tyler was a big factor in the Bullpups posting a winning record. He had a great season as both at running back and as a kick returner.”
Despite opposing defenses focusing on stopping him late in the season, Hovis ran for 1,119 yards and scored 15 touchdowns, including two on kickoff returns, during his senior season. He was named to the All-Ark Valley League first team and honorable mention All-Class 5A All-State as a senior after being named to the All-AVL second team as a junior.
“With three of our current running backs being seniors in next fall, it was important to sign a quality freshman back. We feel Tyler definitely fills that recruiting category.”
“With his connections to McPherson College, the natural assumption was that he would choose to become a Bulldog. However, we made sure we took nothing for granted and recruited Tyler like we would anyone else. At the same time, we were careful not to pressure him. I am sure he felt unspoken pressure to choose McPherson, so we wanted him to make the best possible decision for himself.”
“We’re very glad that decision was to join our football program.”
Tyler is the son of Ron ’77 and Robin ’78 Hovis of McPherson, Kan. He plans to major in history at McPherson College.

The 6’3”, 230-pound Farley is projected to compete for playing time in the Bulldogs’ offensive line..
“Daniel is a real student of the game of football,” said McPherson head coach David Cunningham. “He has a lot of passion for football and hope to go into coaching after his playing career is over.”
“I was very impressed with his enthusiasm when I visited with him at Wellington High School. You appreciate when a prospective player is excited about the chance to visit with you.”
“After watching him on film I felt like he could definitely play for us and the fact he was an offensive lineman made him that much more import in our recruiting scheme. He will vie for a position on the O-line, possibly at the center slot. (Assistant coach) Jason Chalashtari likes his linemen to be versatile, so I am sure he will work at several different positions.”
Daniel is the son of Mark and Beth Farley of Wellington, Kan.

Benisch joins Mac football
McPherson College has announced the recent signing of Chris Benisch of Inman, Kan., to a football letter of intent for the 2004-2005 academic year.

Joining Chris Benisch in his letter of intent signing were his mother Kerry Watson and McPherson College assistant Bill Minard, along with Inman coach Scott Friesen, in back. (Sentinel photo courtesy of Steve Sell)
An honorable mention All-State quarterback in 2003, the 5’9”, 145-pound Benisch also received first team All-Heart of America League honors at the same position last fall after being named honorable mention all-league as a quarterback in 2002 and as a defensive back in 2003.
As a senior, Chris ran for 700 yards and threw for more than 400 yards.
Benisch quarterbacked the Teuton’s of Scott Friesen to back-to-back playoff appearances, but is expected to compete for a slotback spot in the McPherson offense.
“The offensive scheme fits me,” said Benisch at his signing. “It (the program) is great. I really like the new field.”
“We’re excited about Chris joining our program,” said McPherson head assistant and recruiting coordinator Bill Minard. “He’s a tremendous athlete and since Day One, (head) coach (David) Cunningham and my priority has been to sign local and area players. With his experience at quarterback and wide receiver, Chris’ll have a chance to play for us right away.”
An all-around athlete, Benisch started for the Inman High basketball team that recently came within one win of qualifying for the state tournament. He lettered in baseball for three years for the Teutons, but in preparation for the upcoming football season will instead run track this spring.
Chris is the son of Kerry Watson of Inman, Kan.

Hanston’s Hubin signs with Mac
McPherson College has announced the recent signing of Josh Hubin of Hanston, Kan., to a football letter of intent for the 2004-2005 academic year.

Josh Hubin is joined by McPherson assistant coaches David Snodgrass (left) and Bill Minard (back) for his letter of intent signing.
The 5’11”, 180-pound Hubin was part of the Hanston program which won the 2001 and 2002 KSHSAA 8-man Division II state titles before finishing second in 2003.
“we are very glad to have Josh join our program,” said McPherson College football coach David Cunningham. “Coming out of the Hanston program, he knows what it takes to win championships.”
“When we were having lunch with Josh he said something that really impressed me. (Assistant) coach David Snodgrass asked him if he was a state runner-up ring for the 2003 season.” Josh was wearing two state championship rings.
“Josh said that he and his teammates had voted not to get runner-up rings because that was not their goal.”
“I thought that was great. Too many people today want to lower their goals and expectations so they can have a reward. It has cheapened real accomplishments. That is the mind set I want our players to have. Set your goals very high and bust your tail to reach them. Don’t lower your goals just so you can have something to be proud of. Josh will be a very welcome addition to our program.”
Projected as an outside linebacker, Hubin said his eight-man background wouldn’t be a problem. “It’s wide-open. You have to be in shape. I just need to put on some weight to play at this level, and with the weight room here, who wouldn’t want to work at getting stronger.”
“I really liked the atmosphere on campus and among the team,” said Hubin. “Plus, I believe this is a great group of coaches. I really hit it off with them."
“I wasn’t real sure that I would play ball (after high school), but after visiting with the coaches, I’m really excited to be part of the program.”
“I had a chance to see McPherson play a couple of times and I liked what I saw, a program that was moving in a positive direction.”
“The facilities helped a lot (in finalizing the decision). When you come in and see facilities like these, well, they’re first class.”
Hubin is the Bulldogs’ second signee out of the Elks program this spring. He will be joining 2001 Hanston graduate Matt Housman, who is coming to the McPherson football program from Dodge City Community College program.
Joshua is the son of Linda Hubin of Hanston, Kan.

A 2002 graduate of Solomon High School, the 6’1”,
235-pound Adamson played linebacker for coach Kent Keith’s
Independence Pirates the past two seasons.

with before our junior varsity played Independence this fall,”
said McPherson College football coach David Cunningham. “We
were impressed with how he played against us, and liked some other
film we saw on him.”
“We recruited Jamie and two of his teammates,

They both felt it was a good fit, and we ended up getting both Tim
and now Jamie.”

Oswald joins Bulldog football
McPherson College has announced the recent signing of Lucas Oswald
of McPherson, Kan., to a football letter of intent for the 2004-2005
academic year.
A 2003 graduate of McPherson High School, the 5’11”,
205-pound Oswald matriculated to McPherson College this past fall,
but spent his first semester on campus concentrating on his academic
performance in his major area of study, bio-chemistry.
“We recruited Lucas coming out of McPherson
High School a year ago,” said McPherson College football coach
David Cunningham. “Although Lucas did decide to attend McPherson
College, he wasn’t sure he wanted to play college football,
so he sat out this past fall.”
“What happened next is not all that uncommon.
Lucas missed played, and after getting to know several of our players,
decided to come out. He is involved now in our off-season program,
and we are glad to have him as a part of our program.”
“Lucas was a wrestler in high school, so he
has never really been able to take full advantage of an off-season
(weight training) program. Some people may say he is ‘undersized’,
but the quickness and strength necessary in wrestling will work
well for them as he makes gains in the weight room.”
Oswald is tentatively penciled in on the defensive
side of the ball for the Bulldogs. He will be participating in the
Bulldogs’ spring drills.
Lucas is the son of Gary and Joana Osward of McPherson,
Kan.

I’ve missed playing (football) the past year. They’ve
offered me an opportunity to play, and in turn, I want to help the
program.”
“Brooke (Defrene) showed me the door
was open here,” added Richard. “He and the coaches were
really helpful in helping me work through the enrollment process.
I had looked at another school down home, but there I would have
been just another number. People here know me as a person, and I
like that.”
Richard was welcomed to Kansas by seeing snow for
the first time. “It was really amazing to see it floating
down, and blowing around.”
“Alphonse is a friend of Brooke Dufrene,
and another great example of one of our athletes recruiting their
friends to join our program,” said McPherson College football
coach David Cunningham.
“Alphonse visited in mid-January and like what
he saw. He will be joining the team second semester and we expect
him to contend for the back-up quarterback spot behind Erik Johnson,
a fifth year senior.”

the All-Pike Valley League defense and three times to the PVL offense.

David Cunningham. “He is a proven defensive tackle and those
guys are always in high demand. His two years of practicing and
playing in the Jayhawk Conference has given him valuable experience.
“We expect Tim to step in and fight for playing
time right away. We are recruiting several of his teammates from
coach (Kent) Keith’s Independence program. They were exposed
to our campus and facilities by playing a game here against our
junior varsity team back in October. That has proven to be a productive
recruiting tool for us this year.”
Tim is the son of Terry and Connie Benyshek of Agenda,
Kan. He is following a family tradition of competing at the collegiate
level after his father competed in soccer and track at Cloud County

football program by two former high school teammates, Deke Belcher,
currenly a wide receiver for McPherson College, and Clifton Covington,
offensive lineman that signed a week earlier.
“We are happy to have Justin join our program,”
said McPherson College football coach David Cunningham. “he
visited campus earlier in January and it seemed like a good fit
for everyone involved. By enrolling in the spring semester, he will
be able to learn our system and how we operate our football program.
This should enable him to contribute more next fall than if hw was
coming in ‘green’ next August.”
This past fall, Nicklaus-Ratliff attended Tarrant
County College in Fort Worth, Texas. He is expected to battle for
playing time in the defensive backfield and at linebacker.
Clifton is the son of Mike and Wendy Ratliff of Bowie,

McPherson College has announced the recent signing of Clifton Covington
of Bowie, Texas., to a football letter of intent for the 2004-2005

Deke Belcher.
“Clifton originally committed to another KCAC
school,” said McPherson College football coach David Cunningham.
“He is a high school teammate of Deke, and late this summer
he visited our campus was very impressed. He decided to return home
instead of going to the other school with the plan of returning
to enroll here for the spring semester. He made an official football
visit in early January and that sealed the deal.”
“Clifton plays the offensive line which is
a high priority position for us in terms of recruiting, so we are
happy to have him on board.”
Covington will be attending classes at McPherson
College the second semester and participating in the Bulldogs’
off-season conditioning program and spring drills.

Smith joins Mac football
McPherson College has announced the recent signing of Branden Smith
of Buhler, Kan., to a football letter of intent for the 2004-2005
academic year.

Branden Smith inks his Bulldog letter of intent as McPherson College head coach David Cunningham joins in.
The 6’1”, 220-pound Smith, attended Kansas
State University during the fall semester, but will be enrolled
at McPherson for second semester and available for the Bulldogs
off-season conditioning program and spring workouts.
“I was in school at Kansas State, and realized
how much I missed playing (football),” said Smith. “A
good friend of mine (Jared Heinen) was playing here. We talked a
lot about school and football, and he kept telling me I should come
here.”
“I saw a couple of (McPherson’s) games,
and (through Heinen) got to know the coaches, and some of the guys
on the team, and I liked the facilities.”
Projected at this point as a possible defensive back
or safety, Smith’s size and strength will give the McPherson
coaches more than one option.
“Branden is going to be a nice addition for
us,” said McPherson College football coach David Cunningham.
“He’s been impressive in the weight room, and while
it isn’t always true, we expect that to transfer to the playing
field. To be completely honest, Branden is (physically) bigger and
stronger than I remembered him being when we first talked.”
Regarding Heinen’s role in Smith transferring
to McPherson, Cunningham added, “We visit with our team about
the fact, they are our best recruiters. If they’re enjoying
their experience at McPherson College and as part the program, they’ll
sell it to others. This was a good recruiting job by Jared (Heinen).
And, it brings us another guy from the local area.”
Branden lettered in football and track at Buhler
High where he also participated in the music program.
Smith is, sort of, returning home since he attended
the McPherson public schools into his freshman year of high school,
before transferring to Buhler High as part of a family move.

“I wanted to be in a small school environment.
I liked the small town feel, and the coaching staff. And, the facilities

City (Community College) runs a lot of the same stuff we do, so
we see Matt helping us as a slotback-wide receiver and on returns.
He is a very dependable (pass) route runner. He has the ability
to catch the ball in traffic, and can do something with it afterwards.”
“Matt may not be the biggest guy, but he can
be physical and deliver great blocks to help his teammates. He is
a very unselfish person and player.”
“Matt is the type of young man we want at McPherson
College and believe can help us in developing a successful program.
.”
“Coach (David) Snodgrass did a good job of
getting Matt on campus so he could see what we have to offer. And
then, he worked with Matt through the total recruitment process.”

junior year, Matt was named to the 8-man, All-State defense as he
pilfered 11 interceptions, in addition to catching 14 passes for

Hoffman commits to Mac football
McPherson College has announced the recent signing of Matt Hoffman
of McPherson, Kan., to a football letter of intent for the 2004-2005
academic year.

Matt Hoffman signs his letter of intent to join the Bulldog football program next fall. Joining in the signing are (front) his father, Dan, and (back, left) David Payne (McPherson High head football coach), David Cunningham (McPherson College head coach), and David Snodgrass (McPherson College assistant coach).
The 6’ 0”, 175-pound Hoffman is the first
formal commitment to the Bulldog football program for the 2004 recruiting
class.
A second team All-Ark Valley League choice as a defensive
back for McPherson High in 2003, Hoffman scored six touchdowns each
of his final two seasons as a wide receiver and kick returner for
the Bullpups.
“I’m very excited about getting to be
a part of the (McPherson) team,” said Hoffman. “I’m
very exciting to be playing with a team that’s been following
up (throughout the recruiting process). I was excited about the
way they played. I’m excited to play with a winning team.
I like the direction the team is going, the coaches and the guys
on the team.”
“I know I’ll need to get stronger, but
I’m excited about the chance to play at McPherson,”
Hoffman added.
“We’re excited to get Matt,”
said McPherson College football coach David Cunningham, “not
just because he’s a hometown boy, or because he’s Dan’s
son, but because he is a good football player. He’s a good
athlete, he’s from an athletic family. There’s just
not a downside at all about Matt.”
A three-way player for McPherson High the past two
years, Hoffman is initially projected to contribute on the defensive
side of the ball in the secondary and on special teams because of
his size, speed, and athleticism. But, Cunningham added, “We’ll
sit down with both our coordinators and really take a look at where
Matt can help us most.”
“We’re recruiting several young
men from McPherson High and coach Payne’s program this fall.
We hope Matt is just the first of a good group of Bullpups to join
us this year.”
“Our biggest thing since we took over here
is that we’re going to make those guys (from MHS) tell us
no,” added Cunningham. “If they tell us no, we’re
going to wish them luck, but it’s not going to be because
we didn’t put forth the time and effort to meet with them,
talk with them face-to-face.”
“It’s kind a full circle for me,”
Cunningham concluded. “I feel like Dan (Hoffman, Matt’s
father) is the guy who hired me (at McPherson College), and now
we’re able to recruit successfully his son. So on a personal
level, I’m glad about that.”
Matt is the son of Dan and Dawn Hoffman of McPherson,
Kan., and has seemingly grown up on the McPherson College campus,
where his father heads the physical education department after previously
coaching and serving as director of athletics, and where his grandfather
served as president. Matt intends to major in education or astronomical
sciences at McPherson College.
“It is always fun to watch your own kids
perform,” said the elder Hoffman.. “I’ve been
around college athletics for over 20 years and I can’t think
of another coach I’d rather have Matt play for than Dave.
Dave is a class act. He’s doing things the right way. Dawn
and I are real excited about Matt being a part of that.”
