All-KCAC Football Honors
Ratzlaff,
McBroom named Hansen's NAIA All-Americans
Jared Ratzlaff, senior linebacker,
and Troy McBroom, senior wide receiver, were named this week to
Don Hansen's National Weekly Football Gazette NAIA All-American
Team.
Ratzlaff was named to Hansen's
NAIA second team team defense while McBroom was named to the NAIA
honorable mention offensive squad.
Both Ratzlaff and McBroom
were previously named to the 2005 All-KCAC first team defense and
offense, respectively, and to Hansen's All-Central Region teams.
“We are very proud of both
Jared and Tim,” said McPherson head coach David Cunningham.
“They had outstanding careers at McPherson College and were leaders
on both our defense and offense, as well as our football team as
a whole. They are both quality student-athletes and young
men we knew we could count on in good times and bad.”
“Both, Jared and Troy, will
graduate from McPherson and go on to be successful in life. They
are great examples of young men who played junior college ball,
then decided to finish their careers in the KCAC and earn a quality
degree from a great school like McPherson College .”
Ratzlaff
was named the KCAC and NAIA National “Defensive Player of the Week”
following his October 8 th performance when he posted 10 tackles
and a 56-yard fumble recovery return for a touchdown as the Bulldogs
turned back Friends University, 28-21.
A 2001 graduate of Fredonia
High School and 2003 transfer from Coffeyville Community College,
Ratzlaff was a repeat, first team All-KCAC award winner from last
season. Ratzlaff led McPherson in 2005 with 105 total tackles, 34
unassisted. He posted six tackles for 15 yards in lost yardage,
including half a sack, and recovered three fumbles, one for a 56-yard
fumble recovery touchdown run in the Bulldogs' 28-21 win over Friends.
Ratzlaff was also credited with three passes broken up and four
quarterback hurries.
Ratzlaff received All-American
honors after the 2004 season when he led the NAIA in total tackles
with 174 stops including 104 solo tackles. He was named to the 2004
NAIA's second team All-American defense, Dan Hansen's Football Gazette
third team, and NAIAFootball.net's honorable mention squad.
McBroom,
a 2004 transfer from San Joaquin Delta College and 2001 graduate
of Manteca ( Calif. ) High School, led the KCAC in 2005 with 56
pass receptions. His 659 receiving yards ranked third and his six
touchdown catches tied for second among KCAC receivers. McBroom's
six receiving touchdowns led McPherson, and his 36 points scored
tied for third among the Bulldogs.
McBroom concluded his two-year,
McPherson College career with 84 receptions, good for 996 yards
and nine touchdowns.

Two
Bulldogs' named to football All-KCAC first team
McPherson College seniors
Troy McBroom (wide receiver) and Jared Ratzlaff (linebacker) were
named to the 2005 All-KCAC (Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference)
football first team in a recent vote by the conference's coaches.
Named to the second team
were seniors Louie Schneider (offensive line) and Ricky Gottschalk
(defensive line). Seniors Tim Benyshek (defensive line), Matt Housman
(utility), and Lamar Jacobs (running back), along with juniors Ryan
Flores (offensive line), Alex Holtry (linebackers), Patrick Luz
(quarterback), Kris Smiley (wide receiver), and Josh Wentling (defensive
back) received honorable mention recognition.
Troy
McBroom, a 2004 transfer from San Joaquin Delta College
and 2001 graduate of Manteca (Calif.) High School, led the KCAC
with 56 pass receptions. His 659 receiving yards ranked third and
his six touchdown catches tied for second among KCAC receivers.
McBroom's six receiving touchdowns led McPherson, and his 36 points
scored tied for third among the Bulldogs.
McBroom concluded his two-year,
McPherson College career with 84 receptions, good for 996 yards

“Troy was our offensive playmaker
this season, and an outstanding blocker from his wide receiver position.”
Troy is a senior, majoring
in physical education.

Louie
Schneider, a 2001 graduate of Chalmette ( La. ) High School,
was named to All-KCAC honors for the fourth time in 2005. Following
an All-KCAC honorable mention season as a freshman, and winning
first team honors as a sophomore, Schneider spent the 2003 season
at Nicholls State in Louisiana . Transferring back to McPherson
for the 2004 season, Schneider again received honorable mention
All-KCAC honors.
“Louie was the anchor of
our offensive line for four seasons. He's a leader and a rock solid
student-athlete. Louie played in all 40 games during his Bulldog
career.”
Louie is a senior, majoring
in business administration.
Ricky
Gottschalk, a 2002 graduate of Hall High School in Little
Rock, Ark., ranked sixth among the Bulldogs with 54 total tackles,
23 of which were unassisted. He led McPherson with 13 ½ tackles
for loss yardage, including a team high 10 sacks. His 50 ½
yards of lost yardage led McPherson as did his 46 yards in sacks.
Gottschalk forced a team high five fumbles and recovered one. He
was also credited with five quarterback hurries.
“Ricky was a stand-out defensive
end for us all four seasons he has been here. He is hard worker
who played in all 40 games during his career. We are said to see
him leave and hope he will serve as a student assistant in 2006.”
Gottschalk is a senior business
major.
Tim
Benyshek, a 2004 transfer from Independence Community College
and a 2002 graduate of Cuba-Hillcrest High School , was credited
with 58 total tackles, fifth best among the 2005 Bulldogs, including
17 unassisted. Benyshek posted 3 ½ sacks for 33 yards, and
six tackles for 14 ½ of lost yardage. He also recovered two
fumbles and forced three hurried passes.
“Tim is another team
player who put himself ahead of the team on a consistent basis.
Tim is a very good player and an even better student and person.”
Benyshek is a senior, business
administration/marketing major.
Lamar
Jacobs, a 2000 graduate of Manteca (Calif.) High School,
transferred to McPherson in 2003 from San Joaquin Delta College
. This fall, Jacobs ranked sixth among KCAC running backs with 743
yards on 192 carries. His eight rushing touchdowns and 48 points
ranked ninth in total scoring. Jacobs' 743 yards led McPherson as
did his eight rushing touchdowns and 48 total points scored.
Jacobs was named to the All-KCAC
first team in 2003 when he set a McPherson College single season
rushing record of 1,429 yards. Jacobs suffered a knee injury in
the opening game of the 2004 season, and received a medical red-shirt
season for 2005. Lamar finished his McPherson College career with
2,317 rushing yards and 20 rushing touchdowns. He also caught 26
passes for 233 yards and two touchdowns during his days as a Bulldog.
“Lamar led us in both rushing
and scoring as a fifth year senior. He leaves McPherson with both
the single game and single season rushing records.”
Jacobs is a senior computer
science major.
Matt
Housman, a 2004 transfer from Dodge City Community College
and 2001 graduate of Hanston High School , ranked fifth in the KCAC
punt return average, returning 26 punts for 244 yards, and average
of 9.4 yards per return. His 244 yards ranked third in total punt
return yardage. Housman finished 2005 with 132 yards rushing, third
among the Bulldogs.
“Matt is an electrifying
punt returner and a valuable all-around player. He always answered
the bell and was an unselfish player who did whatever we asked of
him.”
Housman is a senior, physical
education major.
Kris
Smiley, a 1999 graduate of Humble (Texas) High School,
and a 2003 transfer from Grambling University , ranked sixth in
all purpose yardage average, 104.7 yards per game, in the KCAC's
2005 regular season. He rushed for 163 yards, had 365 yards receiving,
and totaled 519 yards on kickoff returns for a total of 1,047 all-purpose
yards, fifth best in the KCAC. Smiley ranked sixth in kickoff return
average, averaging 20.0 yards per return on 26 returns. His 519
yards in kickoff returns set a new McPherson College single season
record. Smiley was the Bulldogs second ranked rusher, with 163 yards
on 38 attempts for a team high average of 4.2 yards per carry. His
365 yards receiving on 21 catches also ranked second among McPherson
receivers as did his three receiving touchdowns. Kris tied for second
among the Bulldogs with six touchdowns and his 36 points scored
ranked third.
Kris was named to the NAIA's
honorable mention All-American squad in 2004 as a kick returner
after ending the season ranked fourth nationally with a 30.0 yards
per return average.
“Kris is a very versatile
player who was second in both rushing and receiving for us this
season. He is a very good kick returner. We expect Kris to become
our big play guy on offense next fall.”
Smiley is a senior business
management major, but eligible to return for a fifth season.
Josh
Wentling, a 2003 graduate of McPherson High School and
2005 transfer from Butler Community College, ranked third among
the Bulldogs with 86 total tackles this fall. His 37 unassisted
tackles tied for the team lead among McPherson defenders. Wentling
tied for the team high with three fumble recoveries, returning one
for 19 yards. He ranked second with six passes broken up and intercepted
one pass.
“Josh was a great addition
to our defense this fall. He brought experience and toughness to
that side of the ball. He was third on the team in tackles and added
an interception. His fumble recovery and return (for a touchdown)
were key in our Homecoming win against Friends.”
Wentling is majoring in physical
education.
Alex
Holtry, a 2003 graduate of Vallivue High School, Nampa,
Idaho, ranked fourth among Bulldogs with 84 total tackles, 24 of
which were unassisted. He posted seven tackles for 16 yards in lost
yardage, and one sack. Holtry recovered two fumbles. He broke up
one pass and forced three quarterback hurries.
Holtry previously received
2003 All-KCAC honorable mention recognition.
“Alex had a very solid junior
season and finished fourth on the team in tackles. He is a three
year starter and we are excited about having him back for his senior
season.”
Holtry is a junior, majoring
in education and computer science.
Ryan
Flores, a 2005 transfer from College of the Desert CC and
2003 graduate of LaQuinta (Calif.) High School, moved into the Bulldogs
starting offensive line from day one on the McPherson campus. Flores
also contributed three total tackles, two unassisted.
“Ryan was one of our
best linemen week in and week out. He is a great student and model
ambassador for our program.”
Flores is a junior physical
education major.
Patrick
Luz, a 2003 graduate of Mariposa (Calif.) High School and
2005 transfer from College of the Redwoods, was the KCAC's third
ranked passing quarterback, throwing for 1,576 yards and 12 touchdowns
on 139 completions in 265 attempts, a completion rate of 52.4%.
Luz' 1,588 yards of total offense ranked fifth in the KCAC.
“Pat had a very good
junior year. After making the adjustment from junior college to
four-year, he settled in and finished third in the conference in
passing. Toward the end of the season, Pat also started running
the ball well.”
Luz is a junior, majoring
in computer science.
