2006 Awards Ceremony
Coming off a 5-5 season in 2005, the Bulldogs entered the 2006 season projected for a lower division finish by both coaches of the KCAC as well as the media covering the conference. Still, the Bulldogs’ 2-6 record as October drew to a close had to be a disappointment.
“Our coaches and especially our seniors were looking forward to more wins,” offered McPherson head coach David Cunningham, in his fifth year at the Bulldog helm.
McPherson opened the season with losses to Sterling and Bethel, both teams predicted for upper division finishes. In week three, the Bulldogs posted their first win of season as the Bulldogs turned back Ottawa, 26-7. The next four weeks saw McPherson struggle offensively, scoring on just two field goals and being able to reach the opposing endzone just once, as it lost to Southwestern Assemblies of God in Waxahachie, Texas, to nationally ranked Kansas Wesleyan and Friends, and defending KCAC champion Tabor.
Week eight found McPherson returning to McPherson Stadium and beginning a two-game winning streak with a 14-3 win over county rival Bethany College. The following week, the Bulldogs pulled out a 7-3 win over the University of Saint Mary in a Senior Day send-off for 18 Bulldog seniors, the largest senior class in many seasons.
The 2006 season came to an end with another disappointing road loss, this time to Southwestern in Winfield. That defeat brought to a close the Bulldogs’ 3-7 season, leaving them standing alone in sixth place in the conference race.
Following the Bulldogs’ season finale, coach David Cunningham announced his resignation as head coach, ending his five-year tenure with an overall record of 24-26, the second best win total ever by a Bulldog head football coach.
