2002 Inductees

Three new members were inducted into the McPherson College Athletic Hall of Fame in ceremonies held on Saturday, October 12, 2002.

Dr. Loren Blickenstaff '52 was twice named to the All-KCAC first team in basketball (1951 and 1952) plus was named to 1951 All-KCAC football first team as a defensive tackle. One-half of the Blickenstaff brother combination out of Nampa, Idaho, Loren set the McPherson College single season basketball scoring record with 336 points in 22 games as a senior after missing the old record by just two points as a junior when he scored 290. Blickenstaff also set the school record for free throws made (113) and blocked shots (50) in a season in addition to single game records for field goals made (12) and points scored (25). Following his graduation from McPherson College with a degree in chemistry, Blickenstaff earned his doctorate of medicine from the University of Kansas Medical School in 1956. He later did advanced studies in orthopedics at Walter Reed Army Medical Center before serving as a battalion surgeon and Chief of Orthopedics for the U.S. Army at bases in California and Korea. At the conclusion of his army career, Blickenstaff returned to his home state of Idaho and a private practice in orthopedic medicine in Boise from 1967 through 1990. Author of a text entitled Stress Fractures, he made presentations to the Northwest Orthopedic Society as well as the American Orthopedic Society, and served as president of the Idaho State Orthopedic Society. Blickenstaff has served as president of the Boise State University Athletic Booster Club and as a member of the Boise State University Foundation Board. Still a competitor, Blickenstaff shot a round of golf of 68 at the Hillcrest Country Club in Boise this past June at the age of 71.


Michael Butsch '72 was a three-time KCAC pole vault champion, and record holder, and set a still standing McPherson College school record of 15’3” in the vault in 1971. A native and current resident of Piqua, Ohio, he qualified for four NAIA National track and field championships while a Bulldog, placing 5th at the 1971 NAIA National indoor meet. Following the completion of his eligibility at McPherson College, Butsch went on to twice finish second in the Missouri Valley AAU decathlon in 1972 and 1973. Later, as a Master-level competitor in the pole vault, he won five Ohio Masters pole vault titles and placed fourth in the 1985 National Masters’ championships. A noted speaker on pole vault safety, Butsch helped organize a statewide pole vault coaches’ certification program in the state of Ohio. In his 28 years as a health and physical education teacher at L.T. Ball Junior High in Tipp City, Ohio, he has coached its track and field teams to over 700 wins. In 19 years as the head wrestling coach at Ball, his teams compiled a record of 273 dual wins and 35 losses. Butsch coached his sons Steve and Bryan to six Ohio state high school track and field meet berths including Steve’s state championship at a record height of 15’7”, which also earned Steve an All-American designation. As a high school varsity coach, Butsch has been named Ohio Southwest Rivers Conference golf coach of the year three times as his teams have won three league championships and one district title. He has continued to remain active as an athlete, playing softball at the state and national level, and winning the Piqua City Senior golf title in 2001.


Dr. Carol Zink '87 was a three-time, first team All-KCAC basketball performer for McPherson College (1985-87) after being named to the KCAC honorable mention squad as a freshman. Named the KCAC Player of the Year in 1986, she started all 99 games of her McPherson College career. The Leoti, Kansas, native still holds the McPherson College school records for career scoring and rebounding, with 1574 points and 925 rebounds, respectively. She also holds McPherson College career marks for field goals attempted (1430), field goals made (672), and free throws attempted (306). Twice named the McPherson College Female Athlete of the Year, Zink was also a four-time academic All-KCAC honoree while pursuing her interdisciplinary degree in sports management. Following her playing career at McPherson College, she served as assistant women’s basketball coach for the Bulldogs for one season, and then assisted with the girls’ program for one season at Hays High School while working on a master’s degree at Fort Hays State University. Following the completion of her master’s degree, she served as a sports information assistant at the University of New Mexico while completing a doctor of philosophy in sports administration. Zink spent four years working as a personal trainer and fitness manager, and competing as a natural body builder before joining the Intel Corporation. She currently resides in Corrales, New Mexico, and is a manufacturing supervisor for the Intel Corporation.
