2003 KCAC Honors

Bray leads Bulldogs’ All-KCAC picks

McPherson College sophomore Austin Bray led the Bulldogs’ 2003 post-season soccer picks as he was named the KCAC’s “Newcomer of the Year” as well as to the All-KCAC first team. Freshmen teammates Brett Livaudais and John White were named to the men’s second team while Danny Carman was named honorable mention.

“The honors received by our individual players were all very deserving,” said Doug Quint, McPherson College head soccer coach, “even though I felt we could have easily had a couple more recognized.”

Bray, a 2002 graduate of Provo Canyon High School, Broken Arrow, Okla., led McPherson with eight goals, six assists, and 22 total individual points. Austin transferred to McPherson College this fall from Southwestern Oklahoma State where he started 19 games as a freshman. Bray was voted the KCAC soccer “Offensive Player of the Week” for his two goals, one assist week in mid-October as McPherson won over Bethany and Sterling Colleges. Austin is the son of Debra Sherrill of Broken Arrow.

“What can I say about Austin, other than his honors were well deserved. In my opinion, Austin was by far the best mid-fielder in the conference is the type of young player we are building our program around. He is a very dedicated young man, who worked hard every day.”

“Technically, Austin is one of the best players I have ever coached.”

Brett Livaudais, a 2003 graduate of Ronald Reagan High School in San Antonio, Tex., was named to the second team as a defender. Moved to the defensive end of the field at mid-season, Brett contributed two assists to the Bulldog offensive attack. Brett is the son of Ken and Laura Livaudais of San Antonio. He is a business major.

“Brett had a lot to do with our ability to turn things around (after starting the season 1-9),” said Quint. “He was a leader in the back and kept us organized defensively.”

“Brett still has a lot of things to learn about the defensive end, but he is very willing (to learn). The honors he received were for a position he would rather not play, yet he was willing to do so in order to help his team.”

John White was named KCAC Offensive “Player of the Week” for week #7, when he scored two goals in each of the Bulldogs’ wins over Bethel College and York College of Nebraska. A 2003 graduate of Wichita Southeast High School, White scored seven goals and dished off three assists for 17 individual points, ranking second on the Bulldogs for 2003. John is the son of Brenda and Danny White of Wichita. He is majoring in business/pre-law.

“John really turned things around and became one heck of a scoring threat towards the end of the year,” Quint said. “He had never played striker before, but I felt he would become a huge asset to us with his speed and skill up front. He was willing to give it a try, and even though he became frustrated at times, by the end of the season, he was clicking.”

Unsung and overlooked for the most part was Danny Carman, the Bulldogs’ most tenacious back line standout.

“I believe Danny deserved more honors than he received,” observed Quint regarding the 2003 graduate of Topeka West High School. “Danny is the best one-on-one defender we have at McPherson, and rarely does he get beat by anyone. He tackles the ball well, is very strong on the ball, and work hard every day.”

“It was nice that somebody recognized him, yet more should have.”

Danny is the son of Randy and Loretta Carman of Topeka, and is an accounting major at McPherson College.

Starting from square one as part of the resurrected Bulldog soccer program, the McPherson men finished their season with a 6-12 overall record and in seventh place in the KCAC with 3-6 mark, missing a qualifying spot in the conference post-season tournament by one point.
