2004 KCAC Honors

Townsend leads Bulldogs' All-KCAC picks

McPherson College junior D.J. Townsend led the Bulldogs' 2004 post-season soccer picks as he was named the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference men's “Newcomer of the Year” as well as to the All-KCAC first team. Sophomore John White received All-KCAC honors for a second year as he and sophomore teammate Tyler Lawrence were named to the men's second team. Junior Robert Magana-Garcia and freshman Trenton Bell were named to the all-conference honorable mention squad.

“I was very pleased with the number of honors received by our young men and women,” said Doug Quint, McPherson College head soccer coach. “Each was very deserving even though I had hoped a couple of them would have been placed higher.”

D.J. Townsend , a 2002 graduate of Putnam City High School , transferred to McPherson College this fall from perennial national junior college power Northern Oklahoma College . Townsend contributed two assists while keying the McPherson defense. D.J. is the son of Don and Terri Townsend of Oklahoma City , Okla. , and is majoring in pre-forestry and education.

“D.J. was our rock in the back,” said Quint. “He held us together. He was very difficult to beat and seemed to eat up everything our opponents would throw at him. It was evident that his college experience was vital for us this year. I'm very pleased for D.J. to be honored in this way.”

John White , 2003 graduate of Southeast High School in Wichita , Kan. , is making his second appearance on the All-KCAC post-season lists after earning honorable mention honors in 2003. White tied for the Bulldogs' team lead with five goals and ranked second in individual scoring for the Bulldogs with 10 points. John is the son of Brenda and Danny White of Wichita . He is majoring in business/pre-law.

“John had a very solid year for us, and scored some much needed goals,” Quint said. “His speed makes him dangerous up top or out wide. He's at his best when running at defenders full speed with the ball in the open field. The thing about John is, he has so much more to offer as a player. He is a great kid to coach and a very hard worker on the field. I'm looking for a lot more out of him over the next two years.”

Tyler Lawrence , a 2003 graduate of Hutchinson High School in Hutchinson , Kan. , was named to the second team as a midfielder. Lawrence netted three goals in 2004 for the Bulldogs. Tyler is the son of Bruce and Julie Lawrence of Hutchinson , Kan. He is a computer science major.

“ Tyler provided us with a very good foundation in the center mid this season,” offered Quint. “He is a very smart player tactically with the ball and knows how to start attacks effectively. We, as a team, depend on Tyler for possession of the ball and as a link between the defense and offense. Tyler did a good job of that for us this year. I really look for him to become the complete player over the next two years.”

Robert Magana-Garcia , a 2002 graduate of Buhler High School , transferred to McPherson College from Cloud County Community College in Concordia , Kan. , where he was an All-Jayhawk Conference performer. Magana-Garcia brought leadership and maturity to the Bulldogs' midfield positions. Offensively, he contributed two goals and two assists. Robert is the son of Diana Dauber of Hutchinson , Kan. , and Jorge Magana of Sacramento , Calif. He is majoring in business administration.

“To tell you the truth, I was disappointed because I felt Robert was very deserving of more than this (honorable mention),” stated Quint. “But, knowing Robert as I do, this will really be a huge motivational tool for him. He stepped in this year and did a very solid job for us in many ways. He is a very strong player that is able to play many different positions. Together with D.J. Townsend in the middle, our defense was really hard to beat and kept us in every match.”

Trenton “Deno” Bell , a 2004 graduate of Westmoore High School in Oklahoma City , Okla. , tied for lead among the 2004 Bulldogs with three assists. His five individual points (1 goal, 3 assists) ranked third on the Bulldogs.

Trenton is the son of Morris and Linda Bell of Oklahoma City , Okla. He is a computer science major.

“Deno was one on the most consistent players we had this year,” Quint said. “From the beginning, he didn't play like he was a freshman. He did the things we needed him to do and grew every day as a player. Being a young player in the conference, I was really pleased to see him recognized this way. Deno has so much potential and ability as a player that with continued hard work I really believe the conference might see something special in him.”

In its second year since the program was reinstituted at McPherson College , the Bulldog men were 4-4-1 in conference play and qualified sixth for the KCAC post-season tournament. McPherson was defeated 1-0 in double overtime, in the KCAC post-season quarterfinals at Ottawa , and finished the season with an overall record of 5-12-2.
