KCAC Honors
Three
Bulldogs' named to All-KCAC soccer first team
McPherson College senior
Robert Magana-Garcia, and juniors Tyler Lawrence and Nathan McDaniel,
have been named to the 2005 All-KCAC (Kansas Collegiate Athletic
Conference) men's soccer first team in a vote by the conference's
coaches.
“I was very pleased with
the number of honors received by our young men and women,” said
Doug Quint, McPherson College head soccer coach. “Each was very
deserving.”
Robert
Magana-Garcia , a 2002 graduate of Buhler High School ,
was named to the All-KCAC first team defense this fall after being
named to the 2004 All-KCAC honorable mention squad. Robert transferred
to McPherson College from Cloud County Community College in Concordia
, Kan. , where he was an All-Jayhawk Conference performer. This
season, Robert was credited with one goal and two assists in addition
to anchoring the Bulldogs' backline. Robert is the son of Diana
Dauber of Hutchinson , Kan. , and Jorge Magana of Sacramento , Calif.
Magana-Garcia will graduate next spring with a degree in business
administration.
“Robert had a great year
for us despite some nagging injuries!” stated Quint.
“His ability to go forward
out of the back (line) was a vital part of our attack. He is a great
defensive player, but what sets him apart from other backs, is his
offensive ability. He is one dangerous player on the ball and really
has a knack for flighting balls diagonally.”
“Robert is going to graduate
from McPherson College having really left his mark on this soccer
program. Our goal together was to make this program a KCAC and Regional
competitor. Robert has definitely played a major part in achieving
that. He can graduate knowing his senior year was the most successful
year this soccer program has ever had.”
Tyler
Lawrence , a 2003 graduate of Hutchinson High School in
Hutchinson , Kan. , was named to the All-KCAC first team as a midfielder
after being named to the second team a year ago. Lawrence scored
two goals this past season. Tyler is the son of Bruce and Julie
Lawrence of Hutchinson , Kan. He is a junior business management/computer
science major.
“ Tyler had a great season
for us in center-midfield,” offered Quint. “He really held us together
as a team and provided so much for us in possession. He is such
a dangerous player on the ball and makes great decisions in possession.”
“Our team really relied on
Tyler to do a lot of things, and he loves that pressure! This had
to be one of the best season I've ever seen Tyler have.”
Nathan
McDaniel , a 2003 graduate of Ponca City ( Okla. ) High
School, was named to the All-KCAC first team as a defender. He transferred
this fall to McPherson College from Northern Oklahoma College in
Tonkawa. McDaniel picked up one goal and three assists with 12 of
his 16 shots on goal on the offensive end in his first season with
the Bulldogs. Nathan is the son of Jim and Kerry McDaniel of Ponca
City , Okla. McDaniel is a junior mathematics major at McPherson
College .
“Nathan really did a good
job of anchoring our back-line this year,” offered Quint. “His ball
winning and tackling skills were a vital part of our success.”
“Nathan's size and strength
really enable him to shut down opponents. We need more players with
his physical capabilities!”
“I was really pleased with
Nathan's play this year. In my opinion, he is one of the premier
center backs in the conference and is only getting better!”
The 2005 Bulldogs finished
their regular season with a 5-1-3 KCAC record, good for third in
the conference race and a home berth in the first round of the KCAC
post-season tournament. After defeating Friends 2-0 in the KCAC
post-season tournament quarterfinals, the Bulldogs lost to Ottawa
2-0 in the semifinals. The third place finish is the highest known
conference finish in school soccer history. Their overall season
record of 9-7-4 equaled the school record for wins in a season first
set in 1994 when the Bulldogs were 9-12. The final nine games of
the Bulldogs' regular season found four wins interspersed with three
ties and a one goal loss to regular season and tournament champion,
Kansas Wesleyan.
