The men’s soccer team lost six starters from the 2008 NAIA National tournament qualifying team of a year ago, leaving many questions to be answered in 2009. Despite the loss in personnel, the Bulldogs received six first place votes to gain the top preseason spot in the conference.

Head coach Doug Quint and company showed critics right away that they were deserving of the top seed. McPherson opened the season on a three-match win streak prior to a 2-1 loss at the hands of Mid-America Christian University. The loss served as a wake-up call as the Bulldogs went on to win 10 straight matches, including seven KCAC matches.

Steady goalkeeping, strong defense and timely scoring were the keys to McPherson’s success. Sophomore goalkeeper Blake Jett, Fort Worth, Texas, orchestrated a back line that tallied 10 shutouts and allowed only nine goals in 17 matches. Offensive pressure was once again applied by McPherson College all-time goals and points leader, senior Armando Rodriguez, Dallas, Texas. Armando has scored over 12 goals in each season as a Bulldog.

McPherson wrapped up their regular season with home wins against Sterling College and Bethany. The two wins gave the Bulldogs their first ever KCAC regular season championship and a perfect 9-0 record in the KCAC.

The Bulldogs opened KCAC tournament play with a semifinal matchup with Friends University. In the regular season, McPherson defeated the Falcons 2-0, but were unable to repeat that result in the tournament. The Falcons ended McPherson’s season with a 2-1 victory.
