2003 Season Recap

The scenario for the women’s soccer program was similar to the men’s, except coach Doug Quint got a late start in recruiting for the women due to the late offering and acceptance of the second position after he was hired initially to coach only the men.

After being shut out the first six games of the season, Tawni Camarillo found the back of the net against Concordia College to break the scoring drought for the resurrected McPherson program. Even though they now knew they could score, the Lady Bulldogs’ losing streak continued for another three weeks and six more games. In that stretch, McPherson dropped a 4-2 decision at Southwestern, a match in which they led 2-0, and they gave up a cheap goal in falling 1-0 to Sterling in a non-conference match.

Finally, on October 11, the Lady Bulldogs got not only their first win of the season, but also a shut out as they beat Sterling, 2-0. That win was the kick-start the Bulldogs needed. After they defeated Bethel College, in their next outing 2-1, the Lady Bulldogs dropped a 2-1 overtime decision to York College, then fell to Tabor, 3-2, and finally to Friends to round out their season. Finishing 2-15 overall, the Lady Bulldogs’ 2-7 KCAC mark was good for 8th place.

Mandy Harvey was the only Lady Bulldog to receive post-season KCAC honors as she was named to the All-KCAC second team. Harvey and Becky Amiot tied for the Bulldog scoring lead with three goals each. Laura Engquist and Tawni Camarillo each had three assists to top the McPherson charts.
