Engquist leads Lady Bulldogs' All-KCAC picks
McPherson College sophomore Laura Engquist topped the Lady Bulldogs' 2004 post-season soccer picks as she was named to the All-KCAC women's second team. Freshman teammates Kate Deputy and Lindsey Latham were named to the women's honorable mention squad.
“I was very pleased with the number of honors received by our young men and women,” said Doug Quint, McPherson College head soccer coach. “Each was very deserving even though I had hoped a couple of them would have been placed higher. I was really disappointed that Lisa Sader didn't make the cut.”
Laura Engquist , a 2003 graduate of McPherson High School , scored six goals to tie for the Lady Bulldogs' scoring lead. Her six goals and one assist gave her 13 individual points for the season, second on McPherson's 2004 scoring chart. Laura is the daughter of Richard and DeAnna Engquist of McPherson , Kan. She is a pre-med major.
“Laura is one of the hardest working young ladies that I know,” said Quint. “She spent so much time bettering herself this past off-season. That makes this honor very deserving. Laura played this season with so much passion and confidence. She has really developed into a very dangerous flank player, a fact that became obvious early in the season. I think of where she was last year as a player, compared to this year, and it makes me smile thinking about what she can be over the next two years!”
Kate Deputy , a 2004 graduate of Middle Park High School in Granby , Colo. , topped the Lady Bulldogs' individual scoring list with 15 points. Her six goals tied for the team lead, and she ranked second in assists with three. Kate is the daughter of Hershal and Barbara Deputy of Hot Sulphur Springs , Colo. She is majoring in psychology.
“Kate had a great ‘rookie' year for us,” Quint said. “She came in and had an immediate impact for in a lot of ways. Together with Laura, we had a couple of the best flanks in the conference. Kate is a really quick player that is tremendous one-on-one, and she can finish it. Sometimes Kate is too unselfish as a player, and normally I don't say that. She is all about being a team player and we are trying to get her to be more aggressive near the goal on the dribble.”
Lindsey Latham , a 2004 graduate of El Reno , Oklahoma , High School, was credited with two shut-outs this past season. She had an 82.9% save rate with 194 saves on 234 shots as the Lady Bulldogs ended their season with a four-game winning streak. Lindsey is the daughter of Donna Ingham of El Reno , Okla. She is a pre-physical therapy major.
“Lindsey kept us in a lot of ball games this year,” Quint said. “She faced a lot of shots and was able to turn a whopping 82.9% of them away. As a team, we had the third best defense in the conference and Lindsey had a lot to do with that. Lindsey has what it takes to be one of the premier keepers in the conference and we are going to continue to push her for that recognition.”
After winning two matches in 2003, when the McPherson women's soccer program was resurrected, the 2004 edition won a school record six matches, including the final four, and finished the year with a 6-11-1 record. In conference play, the Ladies were 3-5-1, and just missed a berth in the KCAC post-season tournament as they finished seventh in the final KCAC standings.
