Like the Bulldog men, the Lady Bulldogs’ program broke new ground again in 2006.
After posting a school record six wins in each of the past two years, the Bulldogs surpassed that mark in the first week of October this year, with a win over Ottawa. The Bulldogs would raise their KCAC record to 4-1, and 8-4 overall, with a road win over Tabor the next week.
But, McPherson’s three match winning streak came to an end with a 4-2 loss to KCAC regular season champion Kansas Wesleyan. Notable though was the Bulldogs’ two goals were the only goals allowed by the Coyotes in conference play.
The Lady Bulldogs’ Homecoming/Senior Night match against Friends was a defining 1-0 loss as it included a season ending injury to the Bulldogs’ KCAC leading scorer Monique Buhl. Without its top finisher, McPherson struggled offensively in its final two, regular season matches as a double-overtime 1-1 tie was followed by a 2-0 loss.
Qualifying for the KCAC tournament for the first time in school history, the Bulldogs’ season came to an end with a 1-0 road, defeat in the first round of the KCAC tournament.
In the post-season vote by the conference’s coaches, Monique Buhl was named to the All-KCAC first team for a second time while Victoria Salas and Denise Rinke received their initial first team honors. Sara Kramme was named to the All-KCAC honorable mention squad.
With seven seniors graduating from the program next spring, coach Doug Quint will be busy hitting the recruiting trail, but he also returns a solid core of nine players including his all-conference selections Salas and Kramme, both juniors, and sophomore Buhl.
