The Lady Bulldogs’ 2007 softball season came to a close with a loss in the semifinals of the KCAC post-season tournament held in Winfield.

Like several games this spring, the conference tournament’s start was delayed due to wet playing fields, and the Lady Bulldogs final game of the season ended around 2:00 a.m.

But, the season was successful in that the Lady Bulldogs tied the school record for total wins in a season as they posted the second 20-win season in school history, finishing 20-21.

Courtney Bersuch, Whitney Coleman, Shalyn Skahill, and Erikka Viehman were named to the All-KCAC first team in a vote by the conference’s coaches. Bersuch was also named the KCAC “Newcomer of the Year”. Bersuch, Coleman, and Skahill were later named to the NAIA All-Region IV first team.

Jessica DeCavalle, Abby Evans, and Jessica Yates were named to the All-KCAC second team and Leah Heide was named to the honorable mention All-KCAC squad.

After a pre-conference schedule that saw the Bulldogs travel to Oklahoma City, Sterling, and Avila University in Kansas City, Mo., for tournaments in addition to their own McPherson Invitational, the Bulldogs opened the KCAC slate the first of April.

Picked in the preseason coaches’ poll to tie for the fourth spot in the KCAC title race, ‘split’ was the name of the game during the conference season. After opening the KCAC schedule with doubleheader sweeps of Southwestern and Tabor, the Bulldogs split five of their final six conference twinbills to finish the regular season conference schedule with 9-7 record, good for the predicted fourth place.

The Bulldogs placed fourth in the KCAC post-season tournament, defeating Bethany and the University of Saint Mary, but dropping games to Friends in the winners’ bracket quarterfinals and to Bethany in the consolation semifinals to bring the 2007 season to a close.

With only two graduating seniors on the 2007 roster, and another solid class of incoming recruits, coach Mike McCormick and the Lady Bulldogs have the foundation established for a run at the KCAC crown.
