McPherson sweeps
KCAC softball POW honors
Bersuch named “Player
of the Week”; Yates tabbed “Pitcher of the Week”
McPherson College 's Courtney
Bersuch and Jessica Yates have been
named the KCAC softball “Player” and “Pitcher of the Week”, respectively,
for the week of April 2-8, 2007 as the Lady Bulldogs swept conference
doubleheaders from Southwestern (11-3, 9-1) and Tabor (8-1, 13-1).
Bersuch,
a 5'3” junior catcher from McPherson, Kan., by way of Pratt Community
College, hit .615 for the week, stroking eight hits in 13 at bats
including two doubles, a triple, and two home runs. She drove in
nine runs, scored six runs, and stole one base in one attempt while
compiling a slugging percentage of 1.385.
Against Southwestern, she
was 2 for 4 with a double and home run, driving in three in game
one and 2 for 3 with a home run and three more rbi's.
Against Tabor, Bersuch was
3 for 3 in game one with a double, a triple, and a home run, and
three runs batted in, before going 1 for 3 in game with two runs
scored.
“Courtney has really picked
up the pace with her bat the past couple of weeks,” said McPherson
head coach Mike McCormick. “She's been solid behind the plate and
now is giving us some additional pop at the plate.”
Bersuch is a 2004 graduate
of McPherson High School , and is majoring in business administration
with an emphasis in accounting.
Yates,
a 5-9 sophomore from Silver Lake, picked up two wins in two starts
for the week, allowing no earned runs while
striking out 12, walking only one, and giving up 11 hits.
In her 11-3 win over Southwestern,
Yates gave up nine hits in six innings of the run rule shortened
contest. She struck out six and walked one.
In the Bulldogs' 8-1 win
over Tabor, she gave up only two hits while striking out six and
walking none.
“Jess has been our #1 starter
for two years,” said McCormick. “She has a better feel for the college
game this year, and is using all her pitches to keep the batters
off-balance.”
Yates is a 2005 graduate
of Silver Lake High School and is majoring in biology.

Coleman
named KCAC softball "Player of the Week"
McPherson College’s Whitney Coleman has been named the KCAC softball “Player of the Week” for the week of March 11-17, 2007.
The 5’6” junior from Douglass, Kan., by way of Pratt Community College, led the Lady Bulldogs to a 3-3 week with nine hits in 16 at bats, including her school record fifth and sixth home runs of the season, three doubles, and four runs batted in and walked twice.
For the week, which included a doubleheader sweep of Central Christian College on Tuesday, and a win over Peru State College of Nebraska in the Sterling Invitational, Coleman posted a .563 batting average and a 1.125 slugging percentage.
Whitney posted at least one extra base hit in five of the Bulldogs’ six games.
“Whitney has brought some real ‘pop’ to our lineup this spring,” said McPherson head coach Mike McCormick. “She had a home run in each of the first four games to tie the school season record of four, and then last week claimed the (season) record for herself with two more.”
On the season, Coleman has posted a .388 batting average through the Lady Bulldogs’ first 17 games, all of which she has started. Her 19 hits leads the McPherson team as does her six doubles, six home runs, 15 runs batted in, and slugging percentage of .878.
In the field, Whitney has just one error in 74 chances while playing first base, a .986 fielding percentage.
A 2004 graduate of Douglass High School, Coleman is majoring in physical education.
