KCAC Honors
The Lady Bulldogs opened their 2008 season winning just one of their first five games. But, after a KCAC doubleheader sweep of Sterling and splitting the first two games in the Sterling Invitational, weather cancellations stalled their momentum, and the Bulldogs headed for Arizona for a series of six spring break trip games with an overall record of 4-5.
While the weather was beautiful in Tucson, the level of competition was more than the Bulldogs were ready for as they took on NAIA schools from Canada (Simon Fraser), Oregon (Eastern Oregon), and California (Biola) plus NCAA D-III University of Chicago, and while playing well, dropped all six games.
Upon their return to Kansas, the Lady Bulldogs were swept in back-to-back KCAC doubleheaders before winning four of their next six conference games with sweeps of Tabor and the University of Saint Mary to even their KCAC record at 6-6.
The Bulldogs wrapped up their regular season by dropping doubleheaders to conference leaders Friends and Bethany, finishing 6-10 in KCAC play, tied for fifth, and 8-21 overall.
McPherson opened KCAC post-season play with a loss to Kansas Wesleyan before beating Sterling in the first round of the “sunshine bracket” to keep its season alive. But, the season would last only one more game as Region IV tournament qualifier Ottawa closed the door on the Bulldogs’ 2008 season.
Highlight of the season was Courtney Bersuch being named the NAIA National “Player of the Week”, for her perfect 8-for-8 week in the batter’s box with 14 RBI, three homers, and seven runs scored during the week of March 10-16. She also added four doubles as McPherson out-scored its opposition 35-7 in three games, their KCAC sweep of Sterling and a 15-1, Sterling Invitational win over Southwestern.
Bersuch would later be named to the All-KCAC and all-Region IV first teams, her second season to sweep such honors. Named to the All-KCAC second team was fellow senior Leah Heide.
