McPherson College’s Lady Bulldogs took third while the men placed fourth at the annual ACCK track and field championships held on Saturday at Bethel College.
Seth Cavenee continued his consistent spring of sprinting as he swept the men’s short dashes to be McPherson’s only double winner. Troy Hernandez won the 1500 meters while Brandt Busse took first in the javelin for the only other men’s gold medal finishes. Preston Taylor (200 meters), Tim Cox (800 meters), and Bryan Grosbach (10,000) each placed second as did the Bulldogs 4 x 100 meter relay. Val Thompson led a McPherson 3-4-5 finish in the hammer with a season best 109 feet. Scotty Phillips finished fourth in a season best toss of 105’ 1”, just ahead of Dan Hudachek, who also placed fourth in the discus with a season best 126’ 9”.
Bringing home individual gold medals for the Lady Bulldogs were Deidre Frager, with a provisional qualifying mark for the NAIA national meet in the javelin, Geralyn Hale in the women’ 100 meters, and Beth Krehbiel in the 400 meter hurdles.
Frager picked up a silver medal in the 800 meters while Krehbiel placed second in the high jump. Hale grabbed the bronze medal in the 200 meters. Rebecca Stover was the Lady Bulldogs’ final double medallist, placing third in the triple jump and sixth in the 400 meters.
Mandi Shobe and Bethany Lobmeyer each ran season bests as they finished third and fourth in the 5,000 meters. Kelsey Hendricks notched a third place finish in the shot put while Sheila Bevan was fourth in the discus. In her first competition of the season, Nicole Harkins placed fourth in the long jump.
This week the Bulldogs will travel to Crete, Neb., for the annual Doane Relays. A regular stop on the McPherson track schedule in the 1970’s, this will mark the Dogs first trip to the Relays in over 20 years.
