With a trip to Crete, Nebraska, and the Doane Relays scheduled for Friday and Saturday, the Bulldogs moved into “odd” events Wednesday and used the windy Tabor Invitational as a workout meet. Still, there were season bests and improvement shown.
The top individual finishes among the Bulldogs were third place by Seth Cavenee in the 100 meters (10.90) and Beth Krehbiel in the 400 meter hurdles (1:15.46). The men’s 4 x 100 meter relay team of Kris Smiley, America Patton, Preston Taylor, and Seth Cavenee lowered its season best to 42.62 in also finishing third.
“We still don’t completely trust each other on the hand-offs,” said McPherson coach Bart Gray. “As we get more comfortable with each other, they (the handoffs) will improve and we should get a (national) qualifying time.” [NOTE: The provisional qualifying time is 42.30.]
All of McPherson’s other medals came from the women squad as Rebecca Stover placed fourth in the triple jump with a season best 33-2.5; Nicole Harkins and Geralyn Hale were fifth in the long jump and 100 meters, respectively; Kelsey Hendricks and Deidre Frager each notched a sixth place finish, in the shot put and javelin throw, respectively.
“This was more a workout than anything. The wind was brutal at times. Hopefully we’ll see a lot of PRs at Doane. We’ll be seeing some different competition and getting people back in their normal events.”
