2008 Honors

Mitchell, Parnell named Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes

 

Ashley Mitchell, McPherson College senior from Great Bend, Kan., and Amy Parnell, junior from Liberal, Kan., were named recently as NAIA/Daktronics Outdoor Track & Field Scholar-Athletes for the 2008 season.

 

Mitchell set new school records in the 3,000m steeplechase and 10,000 meters this past season. A 2005 graduate of Great Bend (Kan.) High School and in her third year of attendance at McPherson College, Ashley was a senior academically and graduated in May with a degree in graphic design.

 

Parnell, a 2005 graduate of Liberal High School, competed in collegiate track & field for the first time this spring, running on the Lady Bulldogs' 4x100 and 4x400 relays.

 

“We were please to have Ashley and Amy named to the Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete team.”

 

“We appreciate their leadership in the classroom as well as their contributions to the team and our campus community.”

 

Recipients of the Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete award must have a minimum grade point average of 3.50 on a 4.00 scale, be a junior or above in academic standings, and been in attendance at the nominating institution a minimum of one full school year.

15 Bullodgs earn All-KCAC track & field honors

Three members of the McPherson College track and field team received 2008 All-KCAC first team honors for their individual placing among the top three finishers of the KCAC track and field championships held May 2nd and 3rd at Friends University in Wichita, Kan.

Leading the way for the Bulldogs was double-second place finisher Jordan King (JR, Limon, Colo.) in the 110-meter high hurdles. King had previously received honorable mention All-KCAC recognition in the high hurdles as a freshman.

Zane Walker (SR, Eckley, Colo., Yuma HS) earned All-KCAC first team honors with his third place finish in the high jump. 2008 marked Walker 's fourth season to earn All-KCAC honors in the high jump.

Brent Bailey (JR, Limon, Colo.) brought home the Bulldogs' third All-KCAC first team award by placing third in the 1,500 meters. This was Bailey's second, first team award in the metric mile, his first coming as a freshman in 2006.

Nine Bulldog men and four women combined to earn All-KCAC honorable mention recognition in 11 events.

Earning individual honorable mention All-KCAC honors for finishing fourth was freshman Princeton Summerville (FR, Kansas City, Kan.) in the 100 and 200 meter dashes and sophomore Shaun Griffin ((SO, Inman, Kan.) in the 5,000 meters.

This was Griffin 's second year to earn All-KCAC honors in the 5,000.  Griffin also earned honorable mention recognition by placing fifth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and sixth in the 1,500 meters.

For the Lady Bulldogs, Roxane Ayres (FR, Culver, Kan.) and Tricia Fensky (FR, Moundridge, Kan.) tied for sixth in the pole vault to earn honorable mention recognition.

All three men's relays and two women's relay finished in the top six and earned honorable mention recognition.

The men's 4x400 meters relay made up of Sean McCrae (JR, Marietta, Ga.), Andrew Paull (SR, Kanopolis, Kan.), Ben Cummins (FR, Buhler, Kan.), and Brent Bailey earned honorable mention recognition with its fourth place finish.

Placing sixth were the Bulldog men's 4x100 meters relay of Mark Watson (SO, St. Charles, Mo.), Shawn Young (SR, Colorado Springs, Colo.), Austin Brown (FR, Lawton, Okla.), and Summerville, and the 4x400 relay of McCrae, Bailey, Cummins, and Young.

The Lady Bulldogs' put the same four ladies on the track for both the 4x 100 and 4x400-meter relays. Fensky, Ayres, Tiffany Poet (FR, Flagler, Colo.), and Micha LaJoie (FR, Atchison, Kan ) placed fifth in the 4x100 and sixth in the 4x400 to earn honorable mention recognition.
