A typical early Kansas spring of wet, cool, windy weather set the tone for the Bulldogs’ 2008 track & field season.
Wins by Brent Bailey, Shaun Griffin, Jordan King, Zane Walker, and the men’s 4x100 in the season opening McPherson Invitational was a good indicator as all continued to be among the Bulldogs’ top finishers in the season’s remaining meets.
At the season’s end, King led the Bulldogs with a second place finish at the conference championships while Bailey and Walker each placed third to earn first team All-KCAC honors. Princeton Summerville, Griffin, Mark Watson, Shawn Young, Austin Brown, Sean McCrae, Ben Cummins, and Andrew Paull received honorable mention all-conference honors, either in individual or relay events.
Leading the way for a young Lady Bulldog squad were freshmen Tiffany Poet, Tricia Fensky, Roxane Ayres, and Andrea Swanson, along with the Lady Bulldogs’ lone senior Ashley Mitchell. While Swanson’s promising season came to an early end due to shoulder surgery, Mitchell went on to post school records in the 10,000 meters and 3,000m steeplechase. Poet, Fensky, Ayres, and Micah LaJoie all went on to earn honorable mention All-KCAC honors.
Still, in the end, it was a spring of near misses as Summerville, King, and Walker all just missed the necessary qualifying mark to advance to the NAIA National Championships.
