Alvarez named to 2002 All-KCAC second team
Erica Alvarez, McPherson College junior hitter, was named to the 2002 All-KCAC (Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference) women’s volleyball second team in a vote by the conference’s coaches. A graduate of Rivera High School in Brownsville, Texas, Alvarez was ranked third in the conference in blocks with 73 solo and 71 assisted, an average of 1.44 per game.
“Erica has the physical tools to be as good as any player in the KCAC,” said McPherson coach Nathalea Stephenson. “Erica set the tone for us. There were times she took control of the net, making one play after another. There were also times when she got down on herself (for errors), and we (the team) tended to follow.”
The 5’11” Alvarez led McPherson to a five game “on-the-court” improvement in its win-loss record over last season. Alvarez finished the regular season ranked seventh in the KCAC in kills, averaging 2.99 per game. She had a kill percentage of 36.7%, and posted a serving percentage of 91.3% and 0.3 aces per game. Defensively, she totaled 223 digs, an average of 2.2 successful digs per game.
A three-sport athlete at McPherson College, competing in volleyball, basketball, and softball, Alvarez has been named McPherson College’s “Female Athlete of the Year” the past two years, 2001 and 2002. Last year, she was a unanimous choice for first team All-KCAC in basketball after she finished the regular season ranked second in the KCAC in scoring and sixth in total field goal percentage. She finished her sophomore year averaging 17.9 points, 6.7 rebounds, 1.3 assists, 1.8 steals, and 1.1 blocked shots per game.
