2004 Signings
The following is a list of signings for the 2004 season starting with the most recent signing.


Hallowell signs with Mac

McPherson College has announced the recent signing of Amy Hallowell of Pratt , Kan. , to basketball and volleyball letters of intent for the 2004-2005 academic year.

Joining Amy Hallowell in her letter of intent signing are her parents, Dean and Bev Hallowell, and (back) Lu Bitter, Pratt High head volleyball coach.

A four-year letter winner in both sports at Pratt High School, the 5'8” Hallowell was an All-Mid-State League selection in both volleyball and basketball as a senior after being an honorable mention all-league choice in both sports as a junior.

Following her senior seasons of competition, Amy was named to the Hutchinson News Class 4A All-Area volleyball team and honorable mention All-Area basketball team.

As a senior, Hallowell captained Pratt High's volleyball, basketball, and softball teams. She was also named to the 2004 All-Mid-State League volleyball scholastic achievement team.

“Amy is not a stranger to McPherson College ,” said McPherson College head volleyball coach Nathalea Stephenson. “Her brother, Mark, is a student-athlete at McPherson College , so she knows what we are about.”

 

“We look forward to having her be a part of our team. She is going to bring a strong work ethic and knowledge of the game to the team. She passes the ball well and has a good feel for the game of volleyball. We look forward to watching her grow as a player, student, and person at McPherson College .”

 

In basketball, Hallowell averaged 10.1 points, 7.4 rebounds, and 3 assists per game, and shot 81% from the free throw stripe as a senior for coach Dana Eastes' Greenbacks.

 

“We are very pleased to have Amy joining our team for the '04-'05 season,” said McPherson's women's head coach Mel Wright. “Amy played in our all-star game and we were pleased to see that she could copete against a high level of competition.”

 

“Amy is a dedicated athlete with a desire to reach her potential at the next level. She is a very strong young lady with a good fundamental base of skills. We think she will be a very positive addition to our program.”

 

Amy is the daughter of Dean and Bev Hallowell of Pratt , Kan. She plans to major in business and graphic design at McPherson College . Amy's brother Mark is currently a member of the Bulldogs' mens' basketball squad.

Schmidt signs with Lady Bulldogs

 

McPherson College has announced the recent signing of Stephanie Schmidt of Julesburg, CO., to volleyball and basketball letters of intent for the 2004-2005 academic year.

The 5'7" Schmidt averaged 6.0 assists along with 8.7 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 2.4 steals per game her senior roundball season. She was selected as team captain in both volleyball and basketball her final year at Julesburg High School .

Stephanie was received honorable mention all-state honors in basketball as both a junior and senior, and was named to the Denver Post's all-state season team. She also received all-conference honors her final two prep seasons.

In volleyball, Schmidt was all-conference as a senior in addition to being named honorable mention all-state twice.

“Stephanie comes to McPherson College as an individual that will continue to add skills to our team,” said McPherson College women's head volleyball coach Nathalea Stephenson. “She is a very hard working young lady that will help our team improve on the court.”

“Stephanie has the potential to be a very good volleyball player for us. I am looking forward to working with her these next four years.”

“We are glad to welcome Stephanie to McPherson College and our Lady Bulldog basketball program,” said McPherson College women's head basketball coach Mel Wright. “She was a very talented and dedicated, three-sport athlete in high school. In addition to her all-state honors, she was selected to play in the Colorado Coaches' All-Star basketball game.”

“She shot the ball very well from the outside, hitting 52% from the field. Plus she is very quick and has good overall straight. We are expecting her to make a great contribution to our team.”

Stephanie is the daughter of Kathy Ball and Phil Schmidt of Julesburg , Colo. Stephanie plans to major in English or physical education with a career goal of teaching and coaching.

Miller joins Bulldog spikers
McPherson College has announced the recent signing of Jessica Miller of St. John, Kan.., to a volleyball letter of intent for the 2004-2005 academic year.


Joining Jessica Miller for her letter of intent signing are (front) her parents Joyce and Lance Miller, and (back) McPherson College head volleyball coach Nathalea Stephenson along with St. John volleyball coach Dean Rausch.

The 5’8” Miller was a unanimous first team All-Central Prairie League selection and was named to the Class 2A All-State Tournament team. She was selected for the Southwest Kansas All-Area first team and Goldenbelt All-Area first team as well as being named the Southwest Kansas Class 2A All-Area MVP.

Jessica averaged 10 kills per match and was credited with 252 assists her senior season.

“It is great to have an individual with Jessica’s experience joining our program,” said McPherson College volleyball coach Nathalea Stephenson. “Her high school team has been to state many times, and she comes from a program that knows you have to work hard in order to obtain the goals you have set for the team and yourself.”

“We feel very fortunate to have Jessica joining us, and think she will be a great fit for McPherson College. We look for great things from her.”

Jessica is the daughter of lance and Joyce Miller of St. John, Kan. She plans to major in biology at McPherson College.

Graves signs with Bulldog spikers
McPherson College has announced the recent signing of Casi Graves of Oxford, Kan., to a volleyball letter of intent for the 2004-2005 academic year.


Casi Graves is joined for her letter of intent signing by her parents, (front) Rachelle and Michael Graves along with (back, left) Oxford head coach Robert Hiltzman and McPherson College head coach Nathalea Stephenson.

The 5’6” Graves was a four-year letter winner in volleyball and twice in track at Oxford High School. She was named to the All-South Central Border league honorable mention squad in volleyball following her senior season.

“We are very excited about Casi becoming part of our program,” said McPherson College volleyball coach Nathalea Stephenson. “She has a very strong work ethic that will help push some of our players.”

“Casi is the type of player that is more concerned about the team and how they do instead of having all the attention on her. She will do what she need to do in order for the team to be successful.”

Casi, is the daughter of Rachelle and Michael Graves of Oxford, Kan. She is considering a major in communications and/or theatre at McPherson College.

Griggs joins Bulldogs
McPherson College has announced the recent signing of Michelle Griggs of Solomon, Kan., to a volleyball letter of intent for the 2004-2005 academic year.


Joining Michelle Griggs in her Lady Bulldog letter of intent signing are (front) her parents, Donna and William Griggs, along with (back) Nathalea Stephenson, McPherson College head coach, Oxford High assistant coach Brenda Kroeker, and Nicole Howard, Oxford High School head volleyball coach.

The 5’9” Griggs was a two-year letter winter in volleyball and basketball, and is participating in her fourth year of track at Solomon High School.

“Michelle comes to us from a very good program,” said McPherson College volleyball coach Nathalea Stephenson. “One way to describe her is to say, she is a competitor. She works very hard at improving her game and giving her best on the court.”

“Michelle will be a good fit for McPherson College and we look for great things from her.”

Michelle is the daughter of William and Donna Griggs of Solomon, Kan. Her mother competed in basketball and softball for Marymount College while her uncle, bobby Terry, played football and basketball at Kansas Wesleyan.

Michelle plans to major in elementary education at McPherson College.

Douglas signs with Bulldogs
McPherson College has announced the recent signing of Ashlee Douglas of Toronto, Kan., and Eureka High School to letter of intent for volleyball and track & field for the 2004-2005 academic year.



Ashlee Douglas is joined for her letter of intent signing by (front, left) her mother, Kim, and McPherson College head coach, Nathalea Stephenson, and (back, left) Eureka High track coach Marty Powell and Eureka High volleyball coach, Pam Pitko.

The 5’11” Douglas was a first team All-Tri-Valley League selection in both volleyball and basketball for theTornadoes of Eureka High. During her senior season, she was named to three volleyball all-tournament teams on her way to setting school records for both kills (200) and dink kills (49), blocks (53), and ace serves in a season.

As a junior, Douglas was the only non-senior starter on Eureka’s 2002 undefeated Tri-Valley League and sub-state volleyball champions.

“We are very excited about Ashlee playing for us next year,” said McPherson College volleyball coach Nathalea Stephenson. “She brings a lot of energy and willingness to learn and improve. Ashlee will be playing at the middle spot and we look for great things from her. She knows what it takes to win and works very hard at improving her skills. It will be fun to watch her develop her volleyball skills at McPherson College.”

“Ashlee should be an outstanding two-sport athlete,” added McPherson College head track & field coach Bart Gray. “She is definitely one of those types of athletes that you can build around for the future. As well as being a standout athlete, Ashlee will be a good fit for the type of student we want here at McPherson. She is very solid in the classroom! I am very excited that she has chosen McPherson College to pursue her academic and athletic goals.”

Ashlee is the daughter of David and Kim Douglas of Toronto, Kan.

Roepke joins Bulldog spikers
McPherson College has announced the recent signing of Courtney Roepke of Valley Heights High School and Waterville, Kan., to a volleyball letter of intent for the 2004-2005 academic year.



Joining Courtney Roepke for her letter of intent signing are her father, Kerry Roepke, and (back, left) Crystal Gordon, Valley Heights head coach, and Nathalea Stephenson, McPherson College head volleyball coach.

The 5’5” Roepke was named to the All-Twin Valley League second team in both volleyball and basketball this past season. She was also selected as the MVP for the Heart of America all-star basketball game and the Flint Hills All-Area third team.

In volleyball, she posted a 98.3% serving efficiency, had 100 digs, and rated 80% on her serve receiving as a senior. In basketball, she averaged 11.1 points, 3.9 rebounds, 3.1 assists, and 3.6 steals a game.

“Courtney comes from a very good program that has been to state and knows what it takes to win,” said McPherson College volleyball coach Nathalea Stephenson. “She has a great work ethic and a positive attitude that helps keep her team going.

“Courtney is a back row player that reads the hitters well and covers the floor very well. We are looking forward to having her on our team next year.”

Roepke was introduced to McPherson College by a former high school teammate, and current Lady Bulldog, Jennifer Marquette.

Courtney is the daughter of Kerry Roepke of Waterville, Kan. She plans to major in biochemistry at McPherson College.

Wondra joins Bulldog spikers
McPherson College has announced the recent signing of Julie Wondra of Dodge City Community College and Great Bend, Kan., to a volleyball letter of intent for the 2004-2005 academic year.


A 2002 graduate of Great Bend High School, Wondra has spent the past two years at Dodge City Community College as part of coach Cheryl Adrens’ Lady Conquistador program.

The 6’0”Wondra set a career blocks record for coach Jackie Engle’s Great Bend Panthers her senior year. She participated in the Kansas high school volleyball all-star game and received All-WAC honors in basketball following her senior seasons at Great Bend HS. She twice received Golden Belt All-Area honors in volleyball.

“Julie is the type of young lady that will step into our program and help us from the start,” said McPherson College volleyball coach Nathalea Stephenson. “She led her team in blocks and kills that past year, and it will be great to have someone with her experience.”

“We recruited Julie out of high school, and it is great having her come after two years at Dodge City. I know she will come in with a great work ethic and great skills. Coach (Cheryl) Ahrens does a great job with her athletes (at DCCC) and gets them ready to move to the next level.”

“We are looking for great things from Julie. She will help fill a hole that was left with Erica (Alvarez) graduating.”

Wondra comes from a solid athletic background. Her sister Michelle played tennis and basketball at McPherson College, where she was named “Female Athlete of the Year” in 1992,” while sister Sharon basketball for McCook (Neb.) CC and Emporia State University, and brother Kelly played basketball for Barton County CC.

Julie, who plans to major in biology/pre-vet medicine at McPherson College, is the daughter of Jerry and Kay Wondra of Great Bend, Kan.
