| 2008 Players of
the Week
Loesch
named KCAC volleyball “Player of the Week”, Sievers named “Setter
of the Week”
McPherson College junior
Kiley Loesch and sophomore Destri Sievers grabbed two of three KCAC
vollleyball athlete of the week honors for the week of November
3-9 as the Lady Bulldogs went 2-1 for week with an 3-1 upset win
over #3 seeded, and KCAC regular season runner-up Friends in the
play-in round of the KCAC post-season tournament.
Prior to the win over Friends, the
Lady Bulldogs lost to KCAC regular season champion Bethel College
(0-3) on Tuesday, before coming back to defeat Ottawa (0-3) in Thursday's
regular season finale.
“For Destri and Kiley to
receive these awards for the final week of the regular season is
great,” said Susan Barton, McPherson College head coach. “We
finally strung some wins together. We are passing really well
right now and when you can pass it leads right in to other good
things happening.”
In
being named KCAC “Player of the Week” for the first time, the 5'7”
Loesch was credited with 52 kills, 32 digs, 10 ace serves,
plus two solo and one assisted block in 10 games played. She
totaled 16 kills against Bethel, had 17 kills and tied her season
high with six service aces against Ottawa, then finished off the
week with 19 kills Friends.
“This is a very deserving
honor for Kiley.”
“Kiley knows that without
her teammates she would not be having the season she is. She
has been #1 in the conference in kills, hitting percentage, and
aces per game all season. She currently ranks #3 nationally
in the NAIA for kills per game, #4 in aces per game, and #34 in
hitting percentage. To be ranked that high nationally says
a lot for our whole team and for what we are all trying to do to
get the McPherson College volleyball program back on track.”
During the regular season
portion of the Lady Bulldogs' schedule, Loesch totaled 334 kills
and led the KCAC in kill average (4.58) and service ace average
(0.74).
For the 2008 season, Loesch
has 353 kills, and now ranks second on the McPherson single season
list, trailing only Erica Alvarez's record 399 from 2003. Her 57
service aces for 2008 also ranks second on the McPherson single
season charts, two short of the school record 59 by Kendra Stephenson
in 2004.
Loesch was a 2006 graduate
of Lyons (Kan.) High School, and is a graphic design major.
For
the 5'5” Sievers, this marks the third time this season she
has won the KCAC “Setter of the Week” award. She was credited with
101 assists, 21 digs, two service aces, two kills, and three assisted
block in the Lady Bulldogs' 10 games played.
“Congratulations to Destri
on being named player of the week again. She does a good job;
chases down a lot of balls and gets them to our hitters. This
is the third time this season Destri has been named ‘Setter of the
Week' and I am really happy for her.”
Sievers averaged 10.1
assists per game for the week after handing out 21 against Bethel,
34 versus Ottawa, and 46, one short of her season high 47 against
Bethany, in the win over Friends.
Her regular season average
of 8.31 assists per game led the KCAC while her total of 623 regular
season assists tied for third.
Sievers' 669 total assists
for 2008 (including post-season play) ranks fifth on the Bulldog
all-time single season assists list. With five assists against Kansas
Wesleyan in the KCAC quarterfinals, she could move into fourth place
on the single season list.
Destri has passed out 449
assists, picked up 85 digs, and had 18 service aces, 11 kills, and
three blocks in 54 games played this fall to lead McPherson. She
currently leads the KCAC in assists, with an average of 8.31 per
game and has surpassed her team high total of 443 from 2007.
The Bulldogs' wins over Ottawa
and Friends broke a six-match losing streak by the Lady Bulldogs.
