McPherson College prepared me for the business world in a variety of ways.


First, the course work included a great deal of case study material which I think proved to be most beneficial. The size of enrollment created a small classroom environment that allowed for a great deal of personalized attention from members of the faculty.

Finally, the Business Club embarked on several trips, which allowed students to get a first-hand look at a variety of businesses and industry as well as making connections for possible future job opportunities.

Valco, Inc. employees 50+ people in the southern half of Colorado. Our operations extend along Highway 50 from the Kansas line to the western slope of the mountains in the Gunnison Valley. The company was founded by my father and his uncle 50 years ago this year. Our Major product is ready mixed concrete delivered in our trucks. We also sell sand and gravel products. Our market area covers 10 counties. We have 7 concrete batch plants operating in four divisions. We own or lease our own aggregate deposits where we mine sand and gravel. Each division has a manager. Our corporate headquarters are in Rocky Ford.

McPherson College provided me with the opportunity to get, what I discovered to be, a very competitive classroom education. But more importantly, I was encouraged to grow as an individual by participating in athletics, student government, and dorm life where I met people who have influenced my entire life. The College helped me develop the moral compass instilled in me by my parents. It allowed me to develop a comfortable embracing of the free enterprise system coupled with a keen understanding of the requirement to apply its principles in an ethical way.
