Program Overview

 

During the 2010-2011 academic year:

  • 250 internships or field placements
  • 209 students participated in an internship or field experience, which was 40% of the campus population
  • We worked with 178 organizations
  • 16,170 hours were worked in the McPherson County area through internships, field experiences or Teacher Education–related experiences
  • 46 alums either supervised or helped us connect an employer to a student
  • 81% of the graduating class of 2011 had at least one internship prior to graduation
  • 43% of graduating seniors had a job secured prior to gradation. The national average was 25% according to the National Association of Colleges and Employers
  • 9 out of 9 students were accepted to graduate school prior to graduation.

Four-year seminar system

Incorporates career experiences to ensure that every student will have the opportunity to enhance his or her classroom knowledge. Freshmen can look forward to a year of orientation through a seminar that will prepare them to be successful students and explore the connection between major and career. Sophomores will discover their personal strengths, develop a career plan, learn job search strategies and work in teams to complete a Service-Learning project. Juniors and Seniors will have the opportunity to participate in a series of workshops targeted at advancing their career to the next level.

Workshops are held annually to develop students’ resume writing, job search and interviewing skills as well as assist students in the use of our online resume builder OptimalResume.

Graduate School Workshop

Each November, Career Services hosts a Graduate School Workshop to assist students with their graduate and professional school search and application process. Juniors and Seniors are highly encouraged to participate.

Professional Image

McPherson College is a member of the Image@Work Club. Students may access the website at www.imageatworkclub.com – VIP code:  tH#3*7t  to learn more about such topics as professional interview attire, the meaning of business attire and “business casual”, how to create a professional wardrobe on a budget as well as your online image and business etiquette.

Protocol Party

Career Services partners with the MC Business Club to host a Protocol Party at the historic McPherson Opera House. Students learn how to conduct themselves professionally at business gatherings, networking skills and dining etiquette in an elegant, but fun setting.

Career Fairs and On-Campus Recruiting

Career Services promotes local and regional career fairs to students and will provide transportation to those wishing to attend. Also McPherson College will host employers and graduate school representatives on-campus. Announcements of scheduled visits and pertinent information is sent out to students via email and the Career Services fan page on Face Book.

ACCK Teacher Interview Day

In the Spring, McPherson College along with 5 other regional colleges host the annual ACCK Teacher Interview Day. School administrators from across the state interview senior Teacher Education students for positions. Location of the event rotates among the 6 ACCK colleges. Special Events

Career Services is always looking for interesting and relevant speakers to come to campus. Career Services has hosted speakers such as Preacher Moss (comedian, diversity), Lauren Berger (the Intern Queen) and Eric Chester (expert on Generation Y) to name a few. We also work with local business leaders to host special workshops on campus.
