Leader in Action

Service Spotlight
Students Rebecca Stover and Michaela Goeblacher collaborate to develop a garden project.

Leaders in Action was developed this past year as an effort to broaden student’s perspective on leadership and allow them to develop skills in a service setting. The program consists of several ongoing long-term projects that are focused on integrating student’s skills and interests with community needs. In addition to serving in many capacities, students that participate in the "Leaders in Action" program are also required to meet regularly and share their experiences with other students involved in the program.

Projects during 2002-03 included the following:

"The Bottom Line"
McPherson College has partnered with the McPherson Sentinel to bring the community a monthly column on the business page. The column will feature an analysis of key economic factors that affect McPherson. Each year a student will be responsible for updating the monthly factors and providing a written article for the column. On occasion other students will be involved with writing additional articles as well as layout and design. Adam Peer, Sr., has provided remarkable leadership on this project. Adam has worked since February 2003 with local business leaders to identify the key economic factors important to McPherson as well as the process of attaining the data. Adam also supervised the layout and design of the column.

McPherson Mainstreet Marketing Project
Six McPherson College students representing four majors participate in the first phase of a marketing project for McPherson Mainstreet Inc. This marketing project is the most ambitious marketing project in the state, according to Chris Wiens, Mainstreet Executive Director. The first phase consisted of gathering and analyzing market data. For Justyn Shaw, Jr. business major, this was his opportunity to get an inside look at the development of a real marketing plan. Justyn plans to work in marketing after he graduates. For Danielle Lucore, Sophomore Biochemistry major, this was an opportunity to work with students from other majors and strengthen her team building skills. Danielle plans to work in healthcare after graduation. Each student offered different perspective to the project and contributed to the success of the first phase.

Committee Service Program
An important part of leadership is committee service. In an effort to prepare our students for “life on a committee,” we developed the Committee Service Program. Three spots on local committees and boards have been reserved for McPherson College students, three more are planned and one spot was actively represented in 2002-03. Students that demonstrate an interest in the McPherson community and passion for service are chosen by the Director of Career Services to participate in the program. All participants are required to meet regularly to process their committee work and share experiences with other participants. Danny Rasure, Sr. business major worked extensively with the McPherson Chamber of Commerce Visioning Task Force. Danny conducted focus groups, built databases and participated in event planning. According to Cheryl Lyn Higgens, Chamber Executive Director, Danny provided insight, expertise and motivation that was remarkable for a college student.
