The Department of History and Politics recognizes student achievement in two categories:
The Leland L. Lengel Memorial Scholarship in History
In recognition of the special relationship Dr. Leland L. Lengel had with McPherson College as a graduate of the class of 1956 and as a professor of history and political science from 1963 to 1998, his friends and family established the Leland L. Lengel Memorial Scholarship in History at McPherson College. This award is not granted for financial need. It is granted on the basis of scholarship and academic performance. Each year, the Department of History and Politics reviews the academic performance of the freshman, sophomore, and junior history majors in order to recognize those who are making outstanding progress. At a minimum, a 3.0 grade point average is required to qualify for this scholarship, but only those who consistently demonstrate the highest academic standards are finally chosen.
