Estrella Medina – freshman, Wichita, KS  (en Español )

In the first year that Estrella Medina has been at McPherson College, she's received a wealth of valuable experience. In addition to playing clarinet in band and singing in choir, she's been busy in the classroom as she pursues degrees in music education and special education out of a desire to help others. Professors describe her as self-disciplined and an excellent student who does anything she attempts conscientiously and well.

But some of her most profound learning and experience in helping others occurred outside of the classroom during Global Entrepreneurship Week last November. Along with a team of four others, Estrella took on the challenge to come up with an idea for a sustainable social venture in Haiti. Their idea was to help educate the people of Haiti on the many uses of the highly nutritious moringa tree.

Often called the "miracle tree", the moringa also produces oil that boosts crop and livestock production – the pods can even be used in water purification. The team worked with yéleHaiti, a non-profit organization founded by Haitian musician Wyclef Jean, who were interested in partnering with the college team on bringing moringa trees to Haiti's Tortuga Island. Although the team was a runner-up in the competition, Estrella and the rest of the team are still pursuing grant funding anyway to make their idea happen.
