Melisa Grandison – senior, Quinter, KS
Melisa Grandison has a heart for helping others, and McPherson College has provided opportunities for her to reach out. She has worked on Habitat for Humanity projects and studied abroad in Xalapa, Mexico, through the Brethren Colleges Abroad program. With values of peace and justice, the BCA offers more than a fun experience, but also international understanding and an opportunity to be a citizen of the world.
In addition to these experiences, Melisa took initiative and helped to found MacPAC – Promoting Peace, Advocating Action, Creating Community. The peace and advocacy group has been involved with a variety of social programs in the community and with a global reach.
But Melisa probably got the most attention as part of the winning team for the Global Enterprise Challenge in November of 2010. In just 10 days, six teams of five students were challenged to come up with a sustainable social venture in Haiti. The winning team that she was part of each received a $1,000 scholarship and, more importantly, the opportunity to have the college send them to Haiti at the end of May and work with Haitians to make their idea a reality. The concept, called "Beyond Isles" is to create a community market in Haiti with both a local presence and an online store.
