Five former Bulldogs part of Aviators

UPDATE: McPherson College seniors Freddie Nails (#25) and Louie Schnieder (#74) helped the Wichita Aviators to a 50-43 win over the Kansas Koyotes which had been unbeaten over the last 3 years.

Five former McPherson Bulldogs are on the opening day roster for the Wichita Aviators of the American Professional Football League.

Louie Schneider, Freddie Nails, and Ricky Gottschalk, all members of the McPherson College 2006 graduating class, along with past graduates Ziya Gunay ’05 and Kevin Steiner ’03 have been named to the Aviators’ 33-man squad.

The Aviators will open their 2006 season on Saturday, April 8th in Wichita against the Topeka-based, Kansas Koyotes. The indoor season will end July 29th with the APFL championship game.

Steiner and Nails are both listed as fullbacks while Schneider and Gottschalk are listed as defensive lineman and defensive end, respectively. Gunay earned a spot on the Aviators’ squad last season and is the only kicker listed on the 2006 opening day roster.

The Wichita-based arena indoor football team will be playing its home games at the Wichita Ice Center, 505 W. Maple.

“It was a dream of each of these guys to continue their football career,” said McPherson College head coach David Cunningham. “This is an opportunity to do so.”

“Kevin (Steiner) served as an assistant coach for us after he graduated and Ziya (Gunay) caught on with them last spring while he was finishing up. All three of the other guys remain on schedule to graduate, so we are glad to see them have the chance and wish them the very best.”

The Aviators roster has a definite KCAC look as 15 players listed come from conference schools. Friends has filled six roster spots, McPherson five, and Bethel two, while Kansas Wesleyan and Sterling have one each.
