International Foreign Language Honor Society


"Phi Sigma Iota recognizes outstanding ability and high standards of students and faculty of foreign languages, literatures and cultures (including classics, linguistics, philology, comparative literature, ESL, bilingual education, and second language acquisition). It is the highest academic honor in the field of foreign languages. Phi Sigma Iota has initiated over 60,000 members since its foundation in 1917, and it has created and supports numerous scholarship programs."

The mission of Phi Sigma Iota "promotes the principles of Dedication, Enthusiasm, and Initiative in graduate and undergraduate life by rewarding exceptionally outstanding members with financial scholarships, and by encouraging leadership opportunities in chapter development."

 

Membership Requirements

To be chosen as an undergraduate member, a student must meet the following qualifications:

  1. A student must be at the junior or senior level and officially enrolled in a foreign language or linguistic program.
  2. A student has earned a 3.0 GPA in the overall college course of study up to the date of consideration for membership, including all transfer courses, as well as a 3.0 or above in all foreign language courses.
  3. A student must be enrolled at the institution which has selected him/her for membership.
  4. A student must rank in the top 35% of his/her class in general scholarship.
