The Modern Languages Department commits itself to the teaching of a second language and the development and nurturing of intercultural awareness and sensitivity.
Students increase their job marketability when they know a second language, and fluency in Spanish has consistently been an asset for many college graduates. |
The Spanish major is designed to give students proficiency in the oral and written language, to acquaint them with Hispanic culture, and to develop their appreciation of literature.

Interterm Travel
During Interterm, students participate in Service Learning Opportunities in Spanish speaking areas.

There is a growing need for Spanish language teachers and linguistically prepared government workers.
Opportunities also exist in many phases of business including transportation, industry, journalism, international relations, and publishing as well as research, translating, and interpreting.

Recognizing that residence abroad is the best way to gain proficiency in language, McPherson College requires all Spanish majors to spend their junior year abroad in a Spanish-speaking country.
The Brethren Colleges Abroad (BCA) program provides study opportunities in Cuba, Ecuador, Mexico, and Spain.
