Spanish
What can
I do with
this Major?

Students majoring in Spanish are encouraged to supplement their language focus with courses related to the history, art, music, politics, economics, and social issues of Spanish-speaking countries. Other educational tools available to the Spanish major include a bilingual newspaper, a Hispanic film series, dance classes, and interaction with our growing body of Hispanic students.

Students planning to teach Spanish should major in Spanish while taking the courses in education necessary for certification. The foreign language curriculum is designed to meet standards as outlined by national and state accreditation agencies.

In addition to demonstrating knowledge of second-language instructional methods, resources, and classroom management techniques conducive to critical and creative thinking, Spanish education majors will learn how to motivate both individuals and groups to create a second language environment that encourages positive social interaction, active engagement in learning, and self-motivation.

The Spanish education major will also foster collaborative relationships with school personnel, parents, community members, and agencies that are representatives of various language communities. Practicum opportunities are available with the local school system as well as schools in the urban setting.
