The Spanish language curriculum is aligned to meet the goals
of the Teacher Education Program's Conceptual Framework as well
as the KSDE/NCATE Foreign Language Teaching Standards.
1. The teacher of a foreign language has knowledge in specific
areas related to the target language, its literature, and its
culture appropriate to the developmental needs and interests of
students.
2. The teacher of a foreign language is proficient in the foreign
language.
3. The teacher of a foreign language demonstrates an understanding
of second-language acquisition and its relation to first-language
development including the history of second-language education
in the United States.
4. The teacher of a foreign language understands how individuals
learn and develop and provides second-language learning opportunities
supporting their personal development.
5. The teacher of a foreign language demonstrates knowledge of
second- language instructional methods, resources, and classroom
management techniques conducive to critical and creative thinking.
6. The teacher of a foreign language motivates both individuals
and groups to create a second-language learning environment that
encourages positive social interaction, active engagement in learning,
and self-motivation.
7. The teacher of a foreign language models a variety of effective
communication techniques to address individual learning styles.
8. The teacher of a foreign language integrates knowledge of
and encourages interactions with the local and second-language
cultures and the general school curriculum through a second language.
9. The teacher of a foreign language understands and uses informal
and formal assessment strategies appropriate to second-language
acquisition to evaluate and ensure the continual intellectual,
social, cultural, and physical development of the second-language
learner.
10. The teacher of a foreign language is a lifelong learner and
practitioner, reflects, evaluates, and changes to meet the developmental
needs of self and others.
11. The teacher of a foreign language fosters collaborative relationships
with school personnel, parents, community members, and agencies
who are representatives of various language communities.
