Goldfield Trim & Upholstery
Lindsborg, KS
I graduated in 1984 with an Associates in Technology Degree in Auto Restoration. As a student I had the privilege of working under ‘Pop’ Rice for one semester. Pop encouraged me to consider pursuing auto trim as a vocation.
After completing the program, I worked for three other shops for short periods of time. Two of those shops specialized in auto trim (upholstery).
In 1986, I opened Goldfield Trim & Upholstery as a part-time venture. Since that time at least part of my income has been from working auto upholstery. For several years it was a full-time vocation. Also, from fall 1998 through spring 2000, I served as Assistant Professor of Technology at McPherson College.
I have been privileged to work on several vehicles that have been recognized at the national level by various clubs. Three vehicles I’ve trimmed have been featured on magazine covers. In February 2005, Rod & Custom featured a 1940 Ford Coupe; June 2005, Super Rod featured a 1958 Buick Estate Wagon; August 2006, Classic Chevy featured a 1955 Chevy Bel-Air two door hardtop.
Shop projects are currently divided between restoration and mild customs. My restoration specialty is tufting of leather stuffed with hair as found in early 1900’s vehicles. Customs specialty is retro rods or upgrading original style interiors to more modern design styles or materials.
More than once Pop Rice said, “Son, as an auto trimmer you will never get rich, but you’ll never go hungry.” Pop’s words have proven to be quite appropriate.
