The McPherson College Theatre Department will present “A Doll’s House, Part 2,” by Lucas Hnath on November 15-17 in Mingenback Theatre. The production is part of the current season celebrating 100 Years of Theatre at McPherson College.

The play was nominated for eight Tony Awards in 2017, including Best Play, Best Direction and Best Costumes. And, all four actors were nominated for their respective categories. The play focuses on Nora, who had left her husband and children and then returns after 15 years. The play looks at the gendered rules we play in society as well as how power works in personal relationships.

“It’s written more as an adaption than as a sequel,” Jd Bowman, professor of theatre, said. “People do not need to know the original work to get so much from this current play. Even with ‘Part 2’ in the title, the piece looks at issues that were relevant when the original play was written in 1888 and examines if those are still issues today. Spoiler alert: not much has changed!”

The McPherson College cast includes Erin Fralick as Nora Helmer. Fralick is a senior theatre major from new Palestine, Indiana and this production will be her senior project. Other cast members include J. Tanner Trigg, junior theatre major from Mission, Texas, as Torvald Helmer; Kenzie Jasonius, freshman history major from Prairie View, Kansas, as Emmy Helmer; and Tomi Simmons, sophomore English major from Las Vegas, as Anne Marie. Set and costume design are by Jen Pollard, assistant professor of theatre, and light design by Liz Thornton, senior theatre major.

First Nighters will enjoy a Scandinavian smorgasbord before each performance. Reservations for the show can be made by calling the ticket office at (620) 242-0444 or emailing theatre@mcpherson.edu. Tickets are $5 or $3.50 for seniors and students.
