Dr. Josh Norris has joined the McPherson College faculty this fall as the new director of the McPherson College Choir and McPherson College Singers and as professor of music.
Dr. Norris most recently earned his doctorate from the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, Neb., and has taught at Doane College, Nebraska Wesleyan and high schools in Texas, Iowa, Quebec and England. At MC, he will teach theory, voice lessons and conducting in addition to directing the choirs.
He said he will looking forward to the family atmosphere at McPherson College.
"I was really impressed with how personal and one on one people were," he said. "I like the appeal of a small community."
At McPherson College, Dr. Norris plans to eventually develop men’s and women’s choruses, encourage more student participation across campus and get the choirs involved and visible in the wider community of McPherson.
"I look at what we do in choirs as community outreach," he said.
He said he loves it when his choir's performance gives goosebumps to an audience. Everyone can understand and love music, he said, not just connoisseurs. He said he agrees with author Hans Christian Andersen, who said, "Where words fail, music speaks."
“I want to cultivate that,” he said. “I want people to enjoy that in their lives.”
