Academic Advising

Overview

The Academic Advising team takes a holistic approach to help you reach your academic and career goals. As a freshman and sophomore, before you are assigned to a faculty advisor in your major, you work with an academic advisor to explore and enroll in the right courses, create an academic plan, connect with academic support resources and the resources that support your overall well-being.

An advisor assists with:

  • Registration – build a class schedule that fits your unique needs and goals.
  • Major and career guidance – explore options to focus on the major or career that is right for you.
  • Creating an academic plan – develop a plan that takes advantage of courses and instructors that advance your academic and career goals.
  • Technology navigation – familiarizing you with Bulldog Connect to register for classes, check grades, track progress in your major, check on financial aid or pay a bill.
  • Resources – find the support you need to be successful, whether its tutoring, time management, counseling, or other support.

FAQ

Q: Why are Academic Advisors important to my first-year experience?

A: Academic advisors serve as mentors and advocates, helping you navigate the complexities of college life and empowering you to make informed decisions about your academic and professional future.

Q: How will the Academic Advisors assist me in the enrollment process?

A: Your Academic Advisors will help you choose the right courses based on your academic goals, major requirements, and interests. They may suggest introductory courses, prerequisites, or electives that align with your intended major or career path. Also, advisors guide you on how to navigate the course registration system (Bulldog Connect).

Q: How can I prepare for my advising appointment?

A: Write down any questions you have for your advisor, such as clarification on specific degree requirements, advice on course selection, or information about extracurricular opportunities. Organizing your thoughts beforehand can help ensure you address all your concerns during the appointment.

Q: What happens if I change my major after I enroll?

A: Schedule a meeting with your academic advisor as soon as possible to discuss your decision to change majors. Your advisor can provide guidance on how the change will impact your academic plan, degree requirements, and course selection.

Some courses you’ve already taken may still count toward your new major, while others may not be applicable. Your advisor can help you determine which courses will transfer and fulfill requirements for your new major.

Q: How do I meet with an advisor?

A: Appointments through the Penji app are preferred. However, if you have an urgent question or concern and can’t schedule an appointment in advance, you can still try visiting the advising office during walk-in hours. Just keep in mind that availability may be limited, so it’s best to arrive early or be prepared to wait for a short period of time.

Download the Penji App and log in using your Bulldog email and password.
