Band Concert

This concert will feature selections the McPherson College Concert Band will be performing at KMEA in February 2020: “Early Light” by Carolyn Bremer, “Chasing Sunlight” by Cait Nishimura, “Prairiesong” by Carl Strommen, and “The Sisu Within You” by Meri Jenkins.

The last piece is an exceptionally unique piece. We entered into an exclusive arrangement with Wichita based composer Meri Jenkins to write a piece just for the MC Band this year. “Sisu” is a Finnish construct dating back 500 years or more that refers to extraordinary courage, determination, perseverance, and dignity in the face of adversity. Sisu is discovered and used after reaching the end of physical, emotional, and psychological endurance; a “second wind” of inner strength. Those who personify sisu defy the odds by holding on to hope when there seems to be none.
